AARP Foundation Tax-Aide: We’ve Been Looking for You

This year you may find that VITA tax preparation programs around the state have COVID-19 restrictions.Many VITA volunteers are either working remotely, limiting their in-person availability, or opting for drop-off services.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax preparation in different ways in-person, low-contact, or contact-free depending on what service is available in your area. Some sites can provide service in one or two visits, or you may not need to visit a site at all, with all interactions taking place online.

VITA sites listed below are actively helping clients this year. Look for the location in your area and follow the instructions provided for that site or call the site for further instructions. The VITA programs goal is to complete your tax return in a timely manner. Submitting ALL the information and documentation required to complete the tax return will hasten the process.

AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers in the Alachua County area provide free and confidential income tax preparation to low and moderate income individuals, with special attention to senior citizens, beginning late January through April 15th of each year. Is My Information Secure

We prepare your return with you present, your information is always in your possession, and we keep none of your information at the site. Our local computers must pass rigid security tests and your return is prepared over an encrypted connection to a remote location and we electronically file your return from that location.

Phoenix, AZThe Arizona Department of Revenue presents a variety of free filing services for taxpayers this tax filing season. Taxpayers are strongly encouraged to e-file and direct deposit their refund for a more accurate and secure return which delivers refunds six times faster.

  • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide If a taxpayer is 50 and older and cannot afford a tax preparation service to file federal and Arizona returns, they can obtain assistance at www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide.
  • Free File Alliance Individuals with a federal adjusted gross income in 2021 of $73,000 or less may qualify to receive free e-file preparation from a certified software vendor. Through the Free File Alliance, a taxpayers 2021 federal and state income tax returns can be filed at no cost to them. Visit page for vendors.
  • To ensure no fee is charged, taxpayers must go to the Departments website to complete the return. This saves on preparation fees, prevents costly errors, and ensures that the taxpayer receives any refund directly in the most efficient way possible.
  • Nearly 88,000 Arizona taxpayers used the Free File software last year, saving themselves approximately $9.6 million.
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Taxpayers who made $58,000 or less, have disabilities, or limited English-speaking ability, can acquire free preparation of their tax returns from VITA.

    AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers

    The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will be operating this year at various sites throughout New Mexico but service will be limited and the process will look a little different this year. There will be no in person tax services for New Mexico at this point. People will be asked to wait in their cars while tax prep volunteers take their documents inside the tax-aide site and have them scanned. After returning the documents to the individual, they’ll be asked to return in a few days to sign their return. Strict safety protocols will be followed.

    Taxpayers are required to have an appointment to have their tax returns prepared. There will be three options for doing so. All services listed on the local AARP website should be available starting Tuesday, Feb. 9.

    IRS Taxpayer Assistance CentersIRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are your source for personal tax help when you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone, and you want face-to-face tax assistance.Taxpayer Assistance Center locationsare available in Albuquerque and larger New Mexico cities. Centers are closed for all Federal Holidays.

    CNM Tax Help New Mexico This program offers free assistance in preparing and filing income tax returns. We can help most New Mexico residents with an annual household income of less than $50,000 or who are over the age of 65. Contact the program for more information, and to find out if you qualify.

    Volunteer Income Tax Assistance And Tax Counseling For The Elderly Programs

    The IRS sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs. The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and taxpayers with limited English who need assistance in preparing their tax returns. The TCE program gives priority to seniors age 60 years and older.

    Are There Other Choices

    Yes. The VITA and TCE are also IRS sponsored programs similar to AARPs Tax-Aide program although slightly more limited.

    You can also find several places to prepare your own taxes on-line if your return is relatively simple. The IRS provides a Site Locator for that purpose if your income is under $66,000. .

    The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program announces the opening of the 2023 tax season for the preparation of 2022 tax returns. Free tax preparation services will be provided to eligible taxpayers at the above days, times, and location.

    • Previous two years tax return

    • All correspondence received from the IRS and your state/local taxing authority

    • Social Security cards and/or ITIN notices/cards or other official documentation showing taxpayer identification numbers for every individual on your return

    • Government-issued photo ID for each taxpayer

    • Checking or savings account information if you want to direct deposit any refund or direct debit any amounts due

    • Identity Protection PIN for each individual

    Where Are We

    We provide our services at libraries, churches, senior centers and recreation centers in many locations in Eastern New York during February, March and mid-April. Some locations require reservations and some work on a first-come, first-served, walk-in basis and hours vary depending on location.     How does it work?

    You call and make an appointment. Intake forms will need to be completed prior to your scheduled appointment. These forms are available online. When you come in, someone will review your tax information and a tax counselor will prepare your return. Then, a second person will review the work done to assure that it is correct. We e-file your return and give you a printed copy, and youre done!

    Is it really free?

    There is no charge for our services. We are all volunteers and our equipment is provided by the AARP Foundation. Our host locations allow us to use their facilities as a public service. You can, of course, support us with your donation and you can ear-mark it for the state of New York if you wish, but we cannot take donations at our sites.

    Where Can Seniors Go To Get Their Taxes Done For Free

    If you are elderly or low-income, the AARP Tax-Aide tax preparation service is for you. We dont define what it means to be elderly or low-income and we dont deny service to anyone. However, keep in mind that if you can afford to have your taxes prepared professionally, you may be taking away an opportunity from someone who cannot.
