Douglas County property taxes due by midnight March 31

The fastest and most accurate way to file your tax return is to file electronically.

E-filing your tax return with the IRS is more secure than paper filing. Because the tax return is electronically transmitted to the IRS, you don’t have to worry about it getting lost in the mail or arriving late. You’ll also get confirmation right away that the IRS has received your return and has started processing it.

If you’re waiting for a tax refund, the fastest way to get your money is to have it electronically deposited into your bank account. The IRS typically issues 90% of refunds in less than 21 days when taxpayers combine direct deposit with electronic filing.

$15 Billion In Unclaimed 2018 Refunds

The IRS estimates 1.5 million taxpayers did not file a 2018 tax return to claim tax refunds worth more than $1.5 billion. The three-year window of opportunity to claim a 2018 tax refund closes April 18, 2022, for most taxpayers. If they do not file a 2018 tax return by April 18, 2022, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury. The law requires taxpayers to properly address, mail and ensure the 2018 tax return is postmarked by that date.

CNET has rounded up the best tax software, featuring vendors such as TurboTax, H& R Block and TaxSlayer. These companies can make the tax filing process much easier, from reporting your taxable or self-employed income to setting up direct deposit to going through your itemized deductions.

You can use this service if you meet certain criteria and have a relatively simple tax situation. Requirements include: You make less than $72,000 annually, you dont itemize deductions and you dont own a business. This will likely be helpful for people who do not typically have to file taxes but need to do so this year to claim missing stimulus money.

If you want to itemize deductions or have a more complex financial situation you run a business, have investments or generate rental income youll have to pay for a higher tier of service, which can run a couple hundred dollars. Still, for most people, even the most deluxe online package is far less expensive than hiring an authorized tax pro. And if you prefer to keep it old-school, the IRS online tax forms handle some but not all of the calculations for you and still allow you to e-file or print and mail.

File For An Extension By Tax Day

If you can’t finish your return by the April 18 tax deadline, file IRS Form 4868. This will buy most taxpayers until Oct. 17 to file their tax returns. See more about how extensions work.

Note: A tax extension gets you more time to file your return, not more time to pay your taxes. You still must pay any tax you owe, or a good estimate of that amount, by the tax deadline. Include that payment with your extension request or you could face a late-payment penalty on the taxes due.

Canadas 2021 Tax Deadline Is Today

Todays the day: Just before midnight is the deadline for people across the country including the Sunshine Coast to turn in their individual tax returns, and pay any taxes owed to the CRA.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, this years tax season wasnt extended.

Canada Revenue Agency spokesperson David Nunes says the filing deadline this year is still the same as every other year: April 30th at 11:59 pm.

He also discourages people from putting off filing just because you dont owe any taxes, or youre expecting a refund.

And even though that deadline is right around the corner, we highly recommend everybody sends in their tax returns by the deadline, just to make sure that your benefits and your credits for the following year dont get interrupted, Nunes tells Vista Radio.

He notes if you dont file your taxes on time, your future credits and benefits like the Canada Child Benefit and the Covid Recovery Benefit might actually get interrupted.

According to Nunes, this means you might have to wait longer on the payments that youre already entitled to.

If you received EI or Covid Benefits throughout the year, Nunes explains that you actually do need to include them in your tax return. At this point, he says you should have received a tax slip from the government.

And if COVID-19 forced you to work from home, Nunes says you can actually claim up to $400 in office expenses without the need for any receipts this time around.

Will An Extension Delay Any Taxes You Owe To The Irs

No. Extending your filing deadline doesn’t delay when you have to pay taxes that you may owe. According to the IRS, you need to estimate and pay at least 90% of your tax liability by the deadline to avoid late fees. Otherwise, you will have accrued interest on what you owe, which you’ll eventually have to pay — plus possible penalties — on top of your income taxes.

The late-payment penalty is usually 0.5% per month of the outstanding tax not paid by the filing deadline, maxing out at 25%. The IRS can also issue a late-filing penalty of 5% of the amount due for every month or partial month your tax return is late. If your return is filed more than 60 days after the due date, the minimum late-filing penalty is either $435 or 100% of the unpaid tax .

For individual taxpayers, penalties and interest will stop accruing only when your balance is paid in full. For more on penalties or to work out a payment plan with the IRS, check out its web page.

Tax Day Nearing Many Rush To Meet April 18 Deadline

How to file an extension for your taxes

WICHITA, Kan. – With only two days left in the countdown to Tax Day, many tax professionals see frantic last-minute appointments from people hoping to make the April 18 deadline.

Tax experts say people have until midnight on Monday, April 18, to file their taxes or file an extension. If you miss this deadline, there could be serious financial penalties.

A full appointment book and panicked customers are what Liberty Tax General Manager Shane Albrecht is seeing in the final days before the tax filing deadline.

Last-minute filers, many people who wait till the last minute, typically think they owe. And they probably do they might not, says Albrecht.

He says some tax laws have changed, and many people are surprised to find out they do not owe money, but filers will not know until they get their tax returns done and processed.

I would recommend you get an extension even if youre going to wait a couple of days just because of that late filing penalty, day one. Theres a possibility that you can get hit with it, says Albrecht.

According to Albrecht, if you do not file by the end of April 18, you could be charged a 5% monthly penalty. Filing a quick extension would give you until October 15 to finish filing your taxes. It is essential to know an extension to file is not an extension to pay.

But experts say waiting in line at the post office on Tax Night isnât necessary.

âWe certainly encourage everyone to file on time,â said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of tax for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. âBut if youâre a little bit late, the IRS will probably be pretty reasonable.â

And hereâs one more secret. That midnight deadline for filing taxes is actually midnight Pacific time, giving many of the nationâs procrastinators as much as a three-hour reprieve.

Online filers, especially, may appreciate the time. The reality is that the annual ritual of dashing to the post office to get returns postmarked on April 15 is being replaced by late nights on the computer using tax-preparation software. A majority of returns are now filed electronically.

IRS officials acknowledged the small window of opportunity at a January teleconference, according to Kay Bell, a tax editor with Bankrate.com. That would mean 3 a.m. for East Coast procrastinators, 2 a.m. for those in the Central time zone and 1 a.m. Mountain Time.

Pushing it beyond that can be risky even if the IRS doesnât have a room full of staffers scanning for tax returns postmarked April 16 or 17.
