If youre like most Americans, you live in a state that requires you to file a state tax return. Even though you may not have too much trouble filing your state return, getting your state refund can be more of a pain.
Unclaimed Federal Tax Refunds
If you are eligible for a federal tax refund and dont file a return, then your refund will go unclaimed. Even if you aren’t required to file a return, it might benefit you to file if:
- Federal taxes were withheld from your pay
- You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit
You may not have filed a tax return because your wages were below the filing requirement. But you can still file a return within three years of the filing deadline to get your refund.

Could You Give An Example Of How This Would Work
Example: Bill is entitled to a $2,500 federal income tax refund. He decides to save $1,000 of the refund by buying savings bonds, to save another $1,000 by having the IRS direct deposit that amount to his IRA, and have the IRS direct deposit the remaining $500 to his checking account. Bill gives the IRS these instructions by completing Form 8888 and attaching it to his Form 1040. On the Form 8888, he checks the appropriate checking or savings boxes, gives the IRS the routing and account numbers for his IRA and checking accounts and completes the information specified in the Form 8888 instructions for the bond purchase. Six $50 savings bonds, one $200 savings bond and one $500 savings bond will be mailed to him.

What To Do If You Need The Money From Your State Tax Refund
Unfortunately, you cant pester your states revenue department into issuing your refund sooner, even if you need the money. There really isnt much you can do to get the money in your hands faster.
Rather than fret about the refund that is slow to reach you, consider alternative ways to increase your income. If you made any student loan payments in the last 24 months, you may qualify for a refund of your student loans. You can also earn money quickly through selling valuables or side hustling.
For next tax season, consider adjusting your state tax withholdings, so you keep more of your paycheck each month. That way youll have more money each time you get paid and you wont be waiting on such a large refund in the future.
Some Tax Returns Take Longer To Process Than Others For Many Reasons Including When A Return:
- Is filed on paper
- Needs further review in general
- Is affected by identity theft or fraud
- Includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit. See Q& A below.
- Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse AllocationPDF, which could take up to 14 weeks to process
For the latest information on IRS refund processing during the COVID-19 pandemic, see the IRS Operations Status page.
We will contact you by mail when we need more information to process your return. Will Calling You Help Me Get My Refund Any Faster Or Give Me More Information
IRS representatives can research the status of your return only if:
- It’s been more than 21 days since you received your e-file acceptance notification,
- It’s been more than 6 months since you mailed your paper return, or
- The Where’s My Refund? tool says we can provide more information to you over the phone.
Common Reasons That May Cause Delays
- We found a math error on your return or have to make another adjustment. If our adjustment causes a change to your refund amount, you will receive a notice.
- You used more than one form type to complete your return. The form type is identified in the top left corner of your return. We will return your State tax return for you to complete using the correct form type before we can process your return. View example of form types.
- Your return was missing information or incomplete. Sometimes returns are missing information such as signatures, ID numbers, bank account information, W-2s, or 1099s. We will contact you to request this information so we can process your return. Please respond quickly so we can continue processing your return.
- Your return was selected for additional review. As refund fraud resulting from identify theft has become more widespread, were taking extra steps to review all individual income tax returns we receive to be sure refunds go to the rightful owners. Additional safeguards can mean that it takes us longer to process your refund. However, our goal is to stop fraudulent refunds before theyre issued, not to slow down your refund.

Check The Status Of Your Refund
The best way to check the status your refund is through Where’s My Refund? on IRS.gov. All you need is internet access and this information:
- Your Social Security numbers
- Your filing status
- Your exact whole dollar refund amount
You can start checking on the status of you return within 24 hours after the IRS received your e-filed return, or four weeks after mailing a paper return.
Generally, the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, but some may take longer.
On the go? Track your refund status using the free IRS2Go app. Those who file an amended return should check Wheres My Amended Return?
The Tool Displays Progress In Three Phases:
- Return received
- Refund approved
When the status changes to approved, this means the IRS is preparing to send the refund as a direct deposit to the taxpayer’s bank account or directly to the taxpayer in the mail, by check, to the address used on their tax return.
The IRS updates the Where’s My Refund? tool once a day, usually overnight, so taxpayers don’t need to check the status more often.
Taxpayers allow time for their financial institution to post the refund to their account or for it to be delivered by mail. Calling the IRS won’t speed up a tax refund. The information available on Where’s My Refund? is the same information available to IRS telephone assistors.

Be Aware Of Processing Delays
Again, this year some tax returns with errors or items on the return that need an IRS correction due to a tax law change will take longer than the normal timeframes to process, so expect delays. It may take the IRS more than the normal 21 days to issue refunds for some 2021 tax returns that require review, including but not limited to, ones that claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit . Note: For all tax returns that claim EITC and/or CTC, those refunds must be held, by law, until after mid-February and cannot be released before then.
Protecting Your Tax Refund
Although we try to process your refund within the timeframes stated above, it may take longer due to our rigorous fraud detection procedures. Each year, the Department detects new schemes to commit tax refund fraud, and our staff works hard to stop criminals from stealing your refund.
The Department employs many review and fraud prevention measures to safeguard taxpayer funds. These measures may result in refund wait times of more than of 10 weeks. We apologize for this inconvenience and are actively working to release these refunds.

How New Jersey Processes Income Tax Refunds
Beginning in January, we process Individual Income Tax returns daily. Processing includes:
Generally, we process returns filed using computer software faster than returns filed by paper. Electronic returns typically take a minimum of 4 weeks to process.
Processing of paper tax returns typically takes a minimum of 12 weeks.
We process most returns through our automated system. However, staff members do look at some returns manually to see whether the taxpayer filed income, deductions, and credits correctly.
In some cases, they will send a filer a letter asking for more information. In such cases, we cannot send a refund until the filer responds with the requested information.
Returns that require manual processing may take longer regardless of whether the return was filed electronically or by paper.
To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, staffing is extremely limited and may delay the timeframe to review refund requests.
Please allow additional time for processing and review of refunds.

Can I Track My California Inflation Relief Check

As the state continues to send out the direct payments, is there a way to track the progress of your check?
The short answer is no, the Franchise Tax Board says. But to combat frustration with the vague timelines originally laid out, the agency has released more details on when you can expect to receive your direct deposit or debit card.
To find out when youll see your tax refund, you first need to determine if youre getting a direct deposit or a debit card. If you filed your California state taxes electronically in 2020 and received a refund by direct deposit, youll likely get a direct deposit in this case, too. Pretty much everyone else will get a debit card, the state says.
Second, youll need to determine if you received a Golden State Stimulus payment last year, in either round 1 or round 2. Golden State Stimulus recipients of 2021 are first in line to get the Middle Class Tax Refund in 2022.
Theres one final complication: Debit cards are being sent out in smaller batches, organized in alphabetical order by last name. GSS recipients are first up, broken into four groups getting their debit cards in the mail between Oct. 24 and Dec. 10.
