If you want to get your federal tax refund as soon as possible, then the basic advice is this: File as soon as possible file online, perhaps via the IRS-backed IRS Free File or a commercial service like TurboTax or H& R Block and, when filing online, request your refund be sent to your bank or designated online account via direct deposit. Filing an error-free return is important, too.
Follow this formula, and the IRS says, even in this age of the pandemic-related backlog, most taxpayers will receive their refunds within 21 days.
But what if you want your refund sooner than soon? What if you need it now?
The tax-refund advance is a short-term loan that gets you what’s owed to you , sometimes as soon as the day you file. The loans are backed by your expected refund, and are usually repaid by your eventual IRS refund.
If sitting tight for up to 21 days is impossible this year, or if you’re worried about the IRS not hitting its deadline , then here’s a look at the refund-advance loans offered by some of the biggest commercial tax-prep services: H& R Block and Jackson Hewitt. Both are billed as no-fee, 0% APR, or annual percentage rate, loans.

When Can I Get A Tax Refund Loan
In order to apply for a tax refund loan, youll generally have to first file your federal income tax return. Each year, the IRS announces the start of tax season when it begins accepting tax returns for the previous years taxes. You may be able to file your return earlier than the official first day of tax season, but the IRS wont process it until the season begins.
In 2021, the IRS will begin accepting returns on Feb. 12 for the 2020 tax year, although typically tax season begins in late January. If youre thinking of applying for a refund advance loan this year, check with the lender or tax preparer to see if the later opening of the season might affect their lending time frames.

You could get a lower rate on the same size loan elsewhere and then use your refund to pay it off.
Loan apps provide a low- or no-fee advance on your paycheck. You can typically borrow up to $250, and the app will withdraw the advance amount from your bank account on your next payday. However, loan apps may charge a subscription fee, a fee to get funds faster or ask for an optional tip. These apps can be helpful if you need funds quickly, but they arent a long-term solution.
Payday alternative loans. Some credit unions allow their members to access payday alternative loans from $200 to $2,000, depending on the type of loan. These loans have a maximum APR of 28%, with application fees capped at $20.
Online loans. Some online lenders offer small personal loans starting at $1,000 with next-day funding after approval. Rates range from 6% to 36%, and qualifications vary by lender. Good- or excellent-credit borrowers with high incomes and little existing debt qualify for the lowest rates.

Getting a tax-refund loan may or may not involve paying interest. But even if the refund-anticipation loan youre approved for doesnt assess interest, there may be fees. For example, refund-advance products typically come with administrative fees associated with transferring your refund.
Every tax preparer is different some may offer tax-refund loans with no interest or fees while others may charge interest and fees on the loan. Who Can File Their Taxes For Free With Credit Karma
All Credit Karma members wont have access to free tax filing. According to Poulomi Damany, general manager of assets and tax at Credit Karma, the embedded TurboTax experience will only be available to Credit Karma members who havent previously filed tax returns with CKT as those members were part of Squares acquisition of CKT.
Also, while Damany said Credit Karma aims to provide free tax filing to as many members as possible, it wont be available to all tax situations.
Many members with simple returns, meaning those only filing Form 1040, will be able to enjoy free tax filing with TurboTax within the Credit Karma app from start to finish, Damany said, while others may only be eligible for certain offers and discounts.
According to the TurboTax website, some situations not eligible for free filing with TurboTax* include:
- Itemized deductions
- Unemployment compensation reported on a 1099-G
- Business or 1099-NEC income
- Rental property income
Those eligible for free filing* will be able to file both federal and state income tax returns at no cost.
Some eligible filers may be able to receive part of their refund in as little as one hour of the IRS accepting their return by taking advantage of the TurboTax Refund Advance program.

Currently, TurboTax packages range from $39 for the Deluxe package to $89 for TurboTax Self-Employed, with state returns costing an additional $39 each. But youll need to file early to take advantage of those prices. In prior years, TurboTax has raised rates in late February or early March.

Con: A Significant Risk
The potential risk with any kind of refund loan is that the amount of the loan is based on how much you anticipate getting back in a refund. But many factors could make your actual refund amount different than what you expected.
For example, if you owe a federal or state debt, child support, back taxes or student loans, the IRS can reduce the amount of your refund. When that happens, you could wind up with a lot less money than you anticipated after youre done repaying your refund loan and any associated fees.
