When Are Taxes Due In Your State

Monday Is Deadline To File 2020 Tax Returns

Be sure to find out when your local tax day is. Most taxpayers face state income taxes, and most of the states that have an income tax follow the federal tax deadline. Ask your state’s tax department: When are taxes due?

If you request a tax extension by April 18, you can have until October 17 to file your taxes.

  • However, getting a tax extension only gives you more time to file the paperwork it does not give you more time to pay.

  • If you can’t pay your tax bill when it’s due, the IRS offers installment plans that will let you pay over time. You can apply for one on the IRS website.

If you request a tax extension by April 18, you can have until October 17 to file your taxes.

When Is The Deadline To File Taxes For Missing Stimulus Checks

So its been a while since Ive used the stimulus word I used that word a lot throughout most of 2020 and into 2021 as well as I was tracking the first three stimulus payments on my YouTube channel.

And then I stopped creating stimulus content because it was clear that there was not going to be a fourth stimulus payment, at least not at the federal level.

But I decided to create another piece of stimulus content here in the fall of 2022 because some people have been reaching out to my tax company, Choice Tax Relief, about filing their taxes to get their missed stimulus payments.

Why Are Taxes Due April 18 Instead Of April 15 This Year

Tax Day is usually on April 15. But when a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, it’s pushed back to the next available business day. April 15 was on a Friday this year, so the weekend rule didn’t apply. But Emancipation Day was observed in the District of Columbia on April 15. The holiday honors the end of slavery in Washington, D.C. Since April 15 was a legal holiday in D.C., the IRS couldn’t require tax returns to be filed that day. The next business day was April 18 so that became the new federal income tax filing deadline this year for most people.

How Do I Claim These Benefits

The IRS is urging people who believe they are eligible for the tax credits but haven’t filed a tax return to go ahead and file a return with the tax agency, even if they haven’t yet received a letter from the IRS. But the deadline for filing a return to claim these benefits is Thursday, November 17.

“The IRS reminds people that there’s no penalty for a refund claimed on a tax return filed after the regular April 2022 tax deadline,” the IRS said.

There are a few ways people can claim the benefits:

  • File a return with Free File before November 17, 2022. Free File is available to people who earn less than $73,000.
  • File a simplified 2021 tax return through GetCTC before November 15, 2022.

The IRS said it urges people to file their tax form electronically and to choose direct deposit in order to get their tax credits as soon as possible.

BIR Issues RMC No. 29

It happens. You file your tax return, then realize you forgot to report some income or claim a certain tax credit. You don’t need to redo your whole return. Along with filing an amendment using Form 1040-X, youll also need to include copies of any forms and/or schedules that youre changing or didnt include with your original return.

IRS Form 1040-X is a two-page form used to amend a previously filed tax return. TurboTax can walk you through the amendment process to correct your tax return.

To avoid delays, make sure you only file Form 1040-X after youve already filed your original Form 1040. If youre filing a Form 1040-X to collect a tax credit or refund from a previous year, youll need to file within three years after the date you timely filed your original return, or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

The enhanced Child Tax Credit increased this benefit as high as $3,600 a child in 2021, up from its normal amount of $2,000 per child. The tax credit is aimed at helping parents pay for the cost of raising children.

The IRS sent monthly checks to parents with eligible children for the last six months of 2021, which represented half of the annual credit. The IRS said that families can claim the other half of the credit now even if they received monthly checks in the second half of 2021.

Irs Backlog Of Unprocessed 2020 Returns

    Meet Ken Corbin:

Ken Corbin has two roles: hes the IRSâ first Chief Taxpayer Experience Officer, and also, Commissioner of the Wage and Investment Division, with responsibility for 36,000 employees, located in over 375 sites nationwide, who are administering tax laws governing individual U.S. wage earners.

He recently said: Out of the nearly 168 million 2020 tax returns we received, as of December 4, 2021, we had 6.7 million unprocessed individual returns and 2.6 million unprocessed Forms 1040-X.

Thats 9.3 million individual returns in the hopper from last years tax season. How long it will take for people to get their refund this tax season is any bodys guess.

Commissioner Corbin blames the processing delays on the large inventory of tax returns waiting to be processed due to several factors, including the pandemic. He goes on to say, the IRS is correcting significantly more errors on 2020 tax returns than in previous years. More than 10 million electronically filed returns contained errors requiring a manual review of the return information.

Corbin also stated that, accurate returns filed electronically with refunds due were out the door within 21 days for those using direct deposit.

Steps to Make Tax Filing Easier:

Each fall, the IRS launches a âGet Ready for Taxesâ campaign that encourages taxpayers to prepare to file, including what actions to take and what to know before filing season begins, and how to get help.

File For An Extension By Tax Day

If you can’t finish your return by the April 18 tax deadline, file IRS Form 4868. This will buy most taxpayers until Oct. 17 to file their tax returns. See more about how extensions work.

Note: A tax extension gets you more time to file your return, not more time to pay your taxes. You still must pay any tax you owe, or a good estimate of that amount, by the tax deadline. Include that payment with your extension request or you could face a late-payment penalty on the taxes due.

If you’re owed a refund, there is no penalty for filing federal taxes late, though it may be different for your state taxes. Still, it’s best to e-file or postmark your individual tax return as early as possible.

If you owe the IRS money, however, penalties and interest start to accrue on any remaining unpaid taxes after the filing deadline. The late filing penalty is 5% of the taxes due for each month your return is behind, with fees increasing to up to 25% of your due balance after 60 days have passed.

You may also incur a late-payment penalty, which is 0.5% of the taxes due for each month your return is late, with penalties increasing to up to 25% of your unpaid tax, depending on how long you take to file.

    When Are 2022 Taxes Due

Each year, the IRS sets the due date for filing your federal tax return for April 15 if youre a calendar year filer. Generally, most individuals are, though if you have a business that uses a fiscal year that differs from a calendar year, your return is due on or before the 15th day of the fourth month after the close of your fiscal year. In instances where this due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is moved to the next business day.

The last day of tax filing for 2021 taxes was April 18, 2022, unless you lived in Maine or Massachusetts, where your last day of tax filing was April 19, 2022, because of holidays. Likewise, you could have submitted Form 4868 to request an extension to file later this year.
