Many Taxpayers Can File Their State And Federal Tax Returns For Free

IRS Tax Tip 2021-10, February 1, 2021

As taxpayers get ready to file their federal tax returns, most will also be thinking about preparing their state taxes. There’s some good news for filers wanting to save money. Eligible taxpayers can file their federal and, in many cases, their state taxes at no cost.

Taxpayers whose adjusted gross income was $72,000 or less in 2019 can file their 2020 federal taxes for free using IRS Free File. Many of them can also do their state taxes at no charge. They do so through Free File offered by the IRS.

Sending In Your Tax Returns

In most cases, you cant submit old returns electronically. Instead, you need to mail them to the IRS or your state revenue department. Send your returns to the address on the tax return or tax return directions. If you receive a notice reminding you to file a return, use the address on that IRS letter.

If you are working with an IRS Revenue Officer, you should send the complete returns to that person. When in doubt, contact the IRS or state directly.

These initiatives were designed to improve government to government, government to business and government to citizen electronic capabilities.

One initiative, IRS Free File, instructed the IRS to provide free and secure online tax return preparation and filing services to taxpayers. In accordance with this OMB directive, the IRS worked in partnership with the tax software industry to develop a solution. The result was the formation of the Free File Alliance, LLC.

    Retirement Account Due Dates

If you’re trying to save money for retirement, you might have another October 17 due date to worry about. First, self-employed people who requested a tax filing extension before April 18 have until October 17 to set up or make 2021 contributions to a Simplified Employee Pension IRA.

Retirement savers who contributed too much to a traditional or Roth IRA for 2021 also get more time to fix their mistake. If you asked to extend the due date for your tax return, you can also wait until October 17 to withdraw any excess 2021 IRA contributions . Having that extra time can help you avoid the IRS’s 6% excessive-contribution penalty.

Stop Late Filing And Payment Penalties And Interest

Filing a tax return on time is key to avoid penalties, even if you cant pay the balance you owe. If you dont pay your balance, you may have to pay an additional 5% of the unpaid tax you were required to report for each month your tax return is late, up to five months. Minimum penalty limits also apply.

The IRS assesses another penalty for a failure to pay your taxes owed. If you do file on time, but you cant pay what you owe in full by the due date, youll be fined an additional 0.5% of the amount of the tax not paid on time for each month or part of a month you are late. These fees will accrue until your balance is paid in full or the penalty reaches 25%, whichever comes first.

The IRS also charges interest on overdue taxes. Unlike penalties, interest does not stop accruing after a particular period goes by.

Determine How You Will File Your Taxes

Now that you are ready to file your taxes online, you must determine how to complete the online filing process. There are a few different ways to file your provincial and federal taxes with the CRA.

To file your taxes online, youll have to make sure that you are filing using a Canada Revenue Agency certified tax software platform. In many cases, you can even file your taxes returns for free with one or more of these applications.

Any CRA-certified app will allow you to connect to and submit your tax filing through NETFILE. NETFILE is an electronic tax-filing service that lets you file taxes online and send your income tax and benefit return directly to the Canada Revenue Agency .

As long as youve filed taxes at least once since 2017, your information should be stored in the CRAs database and retrievable by any CRA-certified tax software. Also, if your employer has been completing filings and making remittances on your behalf throughout the current tax year, your information should already be stored in the CRA database. In this case, your information should pre-populate using Auto-fill my return.

Its important to know that not all tax software is certified for all years. So whether you are filing for the current tax year or before, check this page for a list of CRA-certified tax software developers along with the years they are approved for.

    How Late Can You File

The IRS prefers that you file all back tax returns for years you have not yet filed. That said, the IRS usually only requires you to file the last six years of tax returns to be considered in good standing. Even so, the IRS can go back more than six years in certain instances.

Unfortunately, there is a limit on how far back you can file a tax return to claim tax refunds and tax credits. This IRS only allows you to claim refunds and tax credits within three years of the tax returns original due date. By not filing within three years of the due date, you might end up owing even more taxes because you can no longer claim the lucrative tax credits you might have otherwise qualified for.

Deduction For Damaged Or Lost Property

Save money with the H& R Block Free File program. If you qualify, you ...

Hurricane Ian victims may be able to claim a tax deduction for unreimbursed damaged or lost property. To do so, they typically must itemize and file Schedule A with their tax return. However, victims who claim the standard deduction may still be able to deduct their losses if they can claim them as business losses on Schedule C .

The deduction can be claimed on the tax return for the year the damage or loss of property occurred or for the previous year. So, for any destruction in 2022, the deduction can be claimed on either a 2021 tax year return or a 2022 return. In either case, you must write the FEMA declaration number on the return claiming the deduction. For Hurricane Ian in Florida, the number is DR-4673-FL. Also write the Disaster Designation FL Hurricane Ian in bold letters at the top of the form.

If you decide to claim a deduction for 2021, you can amend your 2021 return by filing Form 1040-X . For this purpose, you must file the amended return no later than six months after the due date for filing your return for the year in which the loss took place. So, for Hurricane Ian losses in 2022, you would need to file an amended 2021 return by October 16, 2023. Affected taxpayers claiming the disaster loss on a 2021 return should also put the Disaster Designation in bold letters at the top of the form. See IRS Publication 547 for details.
