Amending An Individual Income Tax Return

Individual income tax returns from 2009 and forward may be amended electronically through Revenue Online. Filing and amending returns in Revenue Online is a free service. You may amend online even if the original return was filed on paper. Revenue Online has all the information from your original return. You will not need to re-enter everything.

If you cannot amend online, you may file the DR 0104X. Make sure you use the appropriate form version for the year you are amending. If you are changing your Colorado return because the IRS made changes to your federal return, you must file the DR 0104X within 30 days of being notified by the IRS. You must amend your Colorado return in this case, even if there is no net change to your tax liability. It is very important that you submit all schedules and supporting documentation for any changes with your amended return. You must submit all schedules, even if you are not changing those values.

With A Revised Paper Return

Do not file a Form ABT with your amended return.

For tax years 2016 and after, you must

  • Complete a revised Form 1 or Form 1-NR/PY and
  • Fill in the Amended return oval on the return.

For tax years before 2016, write Amended return on your amended Form 1 or Form 1-NR/PY.

Your amended return must include all schedules filed with the original return, even if there are no changes.

How To Complete An Amended Return

You can file your amended return electronically, or on paper. If you file electronically, follow the instructions for your software provider.

In either case, make sure to indicate that its an amended return before filling it out.

For paper returns, mark the oval labeled Amended Return. Complete the new return using the corrected information, as if it were the original return. Do not make any adjustments to your amended return to show that you received a refund or paid a balance due with your original return. Attach a complete copy of your federal amended return, if applicable.

If your amended return results in additional tax due, interest must be paid on the tax you owe from the due date on the original return to the date filed or postmarked.

If You Owe Additional Tax With The Amended Return

Calculate the tax, penalty, and interest due, and include both your check and the IA 1040XV amended payment voucher with the amended return. You may make your tax payment online through ePay on our website or with a credit or debit card.

No penalty for additional tax is due if you voluntarily file an amended return and pay all tax due prior to any contact by the Department. However, interest will be due.

Do not send amended returns with the current-year return.

    Ill bet you assume that the IRS is required to accept your amended return. After all, the forms appear on the IRS website, and we know that the agency accepts millions of them every year. But, if you go to the Tax Code, you wont find any mention of amended returns. .

    Thats because amended returns are an administrative creature. In Klinghamer v. Brodrick, the taxpayer challenged a judgment, claiming he had the right to file an amended return.     Is There A Deadline For Filing An Amended Return

    To Complete The Amendment Process:

  • From within your TaxAct return , click on the Filing tab. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then choose Filing.
