Amending An Individual Income Tax Return
Individual income tax returns from 2009 and forward may be amended electronically through Revenue Online. Filing and amending returns in Revenue Online is a free service. You may amend online even if the original return was filed on paper. Revenue Online has all the information from your original return. You will not need to re-enter everything.
If you cannot amend online, you may file the DR 0104X. Make sure you use the appropriate form version for the year you are amending. If you are changing your Colorado return because the IRS made changes to your federal return, you must file the DR 0104X within 30 days of being notified by the IRS. You must amend your Colorado return in this case, even if there is no net change to your tax liability. It is very important that you submit all schedules and supporting documentation for any changes with your amended return. You must submit all schedules, even if you are not changing those values.

With A Revised Paper Return
Do not file a Form ABT with your amended return.
For tax years 2016 and after, you must
- Complete a revised Form 1 or Form 1-NR/PY and
- Fill in the Amended return oval on the return.
For tax years before 2016, write Amended return on your amended Form 1 or Form 1-NR/PY.
Your amended return must include all schedules filed with the original return, even if there are no changes.

How To Complete An Amended Return
You can file your amended return electronically, or on paper. If you file electronically, follow the instructions for your software provider.
In either case, make sure to indicate that its an amended return before filling it out.
For paper returns, mark the oval labeled Amended Return. Complete the new return using the corrected information, as if it were the original return. Do not make any adjustments to your amended return to show that you received a refund or paid a balance due with your original return. Attach a complete copy of your federal amended return, if applicable.
If your amended return results in additional tax due, interest must be paid on the tax you owe from the due date on the original return to the date filed or postmarked.

If You Owe Additional Tax With The Amended Return
Calculate the tax, penalty, and interest due, and include both your check and the IA 1040XV amended payment voucher with the amended return. You may make your tax payment online through ePay on our website or with a credit or debit card.
No penalty for additional tax is due if you voluntarily file an amended return and pay all tax due prior to any contact by the Department. However, interest will be due.
Do not send amended returns with the current-year return.
I Need To Amend My 2020 Tax Return But I Used Turbotax Freefile
What option do you have to access your 2020 return if you used IRS Free File? If you can access the .tax file, you should be able to get 2020 TurboTax Deluxe or Basic and import the return and then amend.
If you used TurboTax Online Free to do your 2021 tax return, you might be able to access your 2020 return from the IRS. If not, you can always request a transcript from the IRS.

In this case, the IRS is probably just going by incorrect data it got from the Social Security Administrationerrors do sometimes creep in.
Our recommendation is to simply mail your return in cases like this. You can try to correct the problem with the SSA and IRS, but it isnt a quick resolution, and you neednt hold your return up while youre waiting.
Dont get us wrongwere crazy about e-filing. We know its the quickest, safest way to file your taxes. But for a tiny percentage of returns, its not perfect. Just like people and computers.

You must wait until the IRS has processed your tax return before making corrections. If you are expecting a tax refund, wait until you receive it before filing an amended return.

Ill bet you assume that the IRS is required to accept your amended return. After all, the forms appear on the IRS website, and we know that the agency accepts millions of them every year. But, if you go to the Tax Code, you wont find any mention of amended returns. .
Thats because amended returns are an administrative creature. In Klinghamer v. Brodrick, the taxpayer challenged a judgment, claiming he had the right to file an amended return. But, the court noted, there is no statute or general regulation having the effect of law which vests in a taxpayer the right to file an amended return after the time for the filing of the original return has expired. However, its been the general practice of the IRS to recognize amended returns filed after the due date to correct clear errors or plain mistakes in original returns.

Can You File A Form 1040x Online
Form 1040X can now be e-filed, and is available through some companies. 1040.com does not currently offer 1040X e-file however, while you cant send the amended return online through 1040.com, you can use 1040.com again to fix the tax return and fill out the Form 1040X.
Before you start filling out Form 1040X, make sure you print your original return so that youll have it to refer to. Then, print Form 1040X and the corrected version of your tax return and mail the whole package to the IRS address provided below.

Due to COVID-19, the IRS is taking longer to process mailed documents, such as paper tax returns. The IRS is processing mailed documents in the order that it is received.
Your amended return can take up to:
- 3 weeks from the date you mailed it to show up in the IRS system.
- 16 weeks to process.

Is There A Deadline For Filing An Amended Return
Generally, amended returns on which you owe additional tax must be filed and the tax paid within three years after the date on which the original return was filed or within three years from the date required by law for filing the return, whichever is later. To Complete The Amendment Process:
If you receive an error when accessing Amend Federal Return that states you must first complete the filing steps prior to amending the return, go to the Filing tab and click Print Return. You will need to go all the way through this process until it actually prints the return . Once you do this, you can go back to the Filing tab and choose to amend the return.The amended return, Form 1040X, will need to be printed when completed and mailed to the IRS. Attach any accompanying documents that may be required. These would be any forms created in the return due to the changes made, or any documentation that would support the changes made . It can take three weeks for an amended return to show up in the IRSs system and up to 16 weeks to process an amended return.

Sometimes, correcting an error on a rejected return is not so easy. You may go round and round, trying to get your AGI right, for example. You say its one number, the IRS says, Sorry, nope, its not.
Check to see if you have an IP PIN. Even if you get your prior-year AGI correct, if you leave out your IP PIN, your tax return will be rejected.

Submit Your Amended Forms
Beginning with the 2019 tax year, the IRS allows you to e-file amended tax returns if you filed the original return electronically and provided that your tax software supplier supports electronically filing amended returns.
