You can access the tool, called Wheres My Refund?, as soon as 24 hours after you e-file your tax return . You can also download the IRS2Go app to track your tax refund on your mobile device.

    COVID

The closer you get to the end of the ten years, the easier it is to settle your debt. If you are attempting to settle your debt with an Offer In Compromise, it will help you to be near the end of the SOL because the less time IRS has, the less it can potentially collect. This does not mean that you should necessarily wait many years before trying to settle your tax liability. To the contrary, if you are a good settlement candidate now, then it is very often the best course to settle now. A successful settlement will get them off your back now, and may rid yourself of your tax liability long before the 10 years is up.

Experts Say Tax Returns Could Be Delayed

Although the IRS says most refunds will be sent within 21 days, experts warn that delays are likely, noting that the agency is still working through 2020 tax returns.

During the 2020 budget year, the IRS processed more than 240 million tax returns and issued roughly $736 billion in refunds, including $268 billion in federal stimulus payments, according to the latest IRS data. Over that period roughly 60 million people called or visited an IRS office.

Donald Williamson, an accounting and taxation professor at American University in Washington, said he expects “weeks and weeks” of IRS delays in 2022. “My advice in 2022 is file early, get started tomorrow and try to put your taxes together with a qualified professional.”

Compounding the challenge, tax preparers told CBS MoneyWatch that it remains hard to reach IRS personnel on the phone. The IRS answered only about 1 in 9 taxpayer calls during fiscal year 2021, Collins reported. “Many taxpayers are not getting answers to their questions and are frustrated,” she noted.

“Back in the old days, you’d wait 5-10 minutes and get an IRS agent on the phone,” said Christian Cyr, a CPA and president and chief investment officer at Cyr Financial. But now, he said, his CPAs wait hours to speak with an IRS employee, with no guarantee of ever reaching one.

How Long After Identity Verification To Get Tax Refund

    To receive refund
If your identity is stolen Takes more time as it is a long process

The IRS is actively going after fraudulent tax refunds this year, but the increase in fraud detection could make it even more frustrating for law-abiding taxpayers. Of these, already 1.9 million are flagged while screening for identity verification, while the rest are for income verification.

Keep in mind that the average wait time for identity verification is 10 days, but it can take up to 60 days if your SSN has been inactive for five years or more.

If you are waiting more than 60 days for identity verification, call the Social Security Administration to inquire about any possible delays.

It takes this long because of the increased fraudulent and identity theft problems. This is why the identity verification request may come off as a surprise, but it is a necessary procedure if you want the refund credited soon enough.

Why Does It Take So Long To Get Your Tax Refund

A tax refund is received only after processing and verification of the income tax returns. As thousands of people file their taxes simultaneously, this process takes some time. However, certain factors may prolong the time taken to receive the tax refund.

There may be a delay in processing tax refunds if the tax department raises any clarification or query, which occurs when the returns filed are incomplete or due to a mismatch in the tax returns filed. It may also occur in case of identity theft or fraud.

Furthermore, obtaining tax refunds may take time if the tax department verifies the details entered by contacting ones employer, financial institutions, or health insurers. The tax department may also wish to cross-check information with other government agencies.

Additionally, more time is required to process the refund due to simple mistakes like incorrect bank details in the ITR form. If one amends the form before processing the original tax return or files returns for multiple years simultaneously, there might be a delay in obtaining the refunds.

Lastly, the presence of any previous unresolved tax debt may delay the processing of tax refunds.

How Long Does A Tax Refund Usually Take To Process

It is usually quite fast. And because most refunds come so fast, its not a good idea to visit a same day refund agent.

Electronic tax returns are the quickest, normally processed by the ATO within two weeks. Etax expects that most refunds will be out within 10 working days after lodgement of your tax return, but some people will wait a bit longer for the ATO to get it done.

Paper returns are much slower, taking 10 weeks.

When you need your tax refund in a hurry and want to avoid ATO delays, make sure all your details are correct. Prepare your receipts early and only claim eligible tax deductions to avoid ATO complications that will slow down your refund.

I Filed My Return More Than Ten Years Ago Why Do I Still Owe

Why did I get my state tax refund first 2020?

Probably because the statute was paused for a period of time. The 10-year SOL can be suspended by certain actions you take to stop collections. There are actions that you, the taxpayer, can take which prohibit the IRS from collecting, and so the 10-year statute is suspended until such actions are completed and the IRS can once again collect. The ten years allowed to collect has not changed, it is only suspended. Some examples of suspending the statute of limitations include filing a bankruptcy or petition in tax court. More common examples include filing a Collection Due Process Appeal or an Offer In Compromise . There are several other actions that can suspend the statute. They all have in common the effect of prohibiting the IRS from collecting for a time.

I have seen cases in which the statute is extended for as many as five years because of bankruptcy and settlement attempts. This can prolong the pain of being subject to IRS collection, but the results you can achieve by exercising your appeal and court rights may be worth the additional time in collections.

When You Should Call The Irs

The IRS online tools are all that most people need to track the status of a tax refund. But there are some exceptions. You might need to give the IRS a call in the following situations:

    • Wheres My Refund?,Wheres My Amended Return?, or IRS2Go directs you to call.
    • Its been more than 21 days since you filed electronically and youre eager to know the status of your refund or worried about theft or fraud.
    • Its been more than 20 weeks since you mailed an amended tax return.

Keep in mind that calling the IRS wont speed up the processing of your refund. According to the IRS, if youre eager to know when your refund will arrive, youre better off using one of its online tracking tools. The IRS updates the status of refunds daily, generally overnight, so checking an online tool multiple times throughout the day probably wont be helpful.

Remember, phone representatives at the IRS can only research the status of your refund 21 days after you file electronically, six weeks after you mail a paper return, or 16 weeks after you mail an amended return.

    Checking Status Of Your Refund

Taxpayers can check the status of their refund at the IRS site “Where’s My Refund?”

People will need to know their Social Security number or their Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, their filing status and their exact refund amount.

The IRS says people can start checking the status of their refund within 24 hours after an electronically filed return is received by the agency, or four weeks after a taxpayer mails a paper return.

The tool will provide information about three phases of processing: Alerting the taxpayer when their return is received, when their refund is approved and when the refund is sent.
