When Can I Expect To Get My Tax Refund

The Internal Revenue Service makes no firm promises about when your tax refund will arrive. The agency does release ranges of typical release dates, and you can use those estimates as you plan. In general, the IRS says, refunds are issued between six and eight weeks after the officials receive an accurate tax form. There are a few important things to notice about this statement.

    • The range: Two weeks can mean a lot to working families. But that’s the gap that sits between six and eight weeks.
    • Reception: The clock starts ticking when officials get your paperwork, not when you send it.
    • Accuracy: The range doesnt apply if something about your tax forms is incorrect. Any incomplete or incorrect issues on your forms can restart the clock from the time they are corrected.

More than 90 percent of refunds are issued within 21 days. But clearly, plenty of people get their refunds later. And some speed up the process and get their money sooner too. With a Current Premium Account, we get you your tax refund money up to 5 days faster than traditional banks . As soon as we receive the refund from the IRS, we credit your account.

Other Factors That Could Affect The Timing Of Your Refund

Additional factors could slow down the processing of your tax refund, such as errors, incomplete returns or fraud.

Taxpayers who claim the earned income tax credit or the additional child tax credit may see additional delays because of special rules that require the IRS to hold their refunds until Feb. 27. You should also expect to wait longer for your refund if the IRS determines that your tax return needs further review.

Refunds for returns that have errors or that need special handling could take up to four months, according to the IRS. Tax returns that need special handling include those that have an incorrect amount for the Recovery Rebate Credit and some that claim the EITC or the ACTC. Delays also occur when the IRS suspects identity theft or fraud with any return.

Respond quickly if the IRS contacts you by mail for more information or to verify a return. A delay in responding will increase the wait time for your refund.

If you submitted an amended tax form, it may take more than 20 weeks to receive a refund due to processing delays related to the pandemic.

You May Face A Delay If You Claim These Tax Credits

There are a couple of issues that could cause delays, even if you do everything correctly.

The IRS notes that it can’t issue a refund that involves the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit before mid-February. “The law provides this additional time to help the IRS stop fraudulent refunds from being issued,” the agency said this week.

That means if you file as soon as possible on January 24, you still might not receive a refund within the 21-day time frame if your tax return involves either of those tax credits. In fact, the IRS is informing those who claim these credits that they will most likely receive their refunds in early March, assuming they filed their returns on January 24 or close to that date.

The reason relates to a 2015 law that slows refunds for people who claim these credits, which was designed as a measure to combat fraudsters who rely on identity theft to grab taxpayer’s refunds.

How To File Tax Returns For Previous Years

Filing a tax return for a previous year isnt as hard as you may think, but it does require a few steps.

    1. Gather information

The first step is gathering any information from the year you want to file a tax return for. Pull together your W-2s, 1099s, and information for any deductions or credits you may qualify for. Look on the tax forms you gather for the year of the tax return youre filing to make sure you use the right ones.

    2. Request tax documents from the IRS

Finding documents from previous years may be challenging for some. Thankfully, the IRS has a form you can fill out to request any tax information they have on file for you for a given year. Form 4506-T allows you to request a transcript of your tax return information, even if you havent filed a tax return. You can request information from the last 10 tax years.

The IRS will send the information it has on record, including information found on forms such as W-2s, 1099s, and 1098s. It wont have information about deductions and credits you may qualify for, though, so youll still need to do some work on your own.

    3. Complete and file your tax return

Once you have all the forms you need, be sure to use the tax forms from the year youre filing. For instance, you must use 2018 tax return forms to file a 2018 tax return. You can find these documents on the IRS website. Patience is important when filling out a tax return by hand. And thankfully, you can also file tax returns from previous years using TurboTax.
