Here’s how long it will take to get your tax refund

There will be two rebates. One is for income taxes and another for property taxes.

Income tax

The income tax rebate calls for a single person to receive $50, while those who file taxes jointly are poised to receive a total of $100, Mendoza’s office said in a news release. Residents with dependents will receive a rebate of up to $300 — $100 per dependent, with a maximum of three.

Income limits of $200,000 per individual taxpayer, or $400,000 for joint filers, will be attached to the checks, according to officials. To qualify, you must have been an Illinois resident in 2021 and meet the income criteria. Those who filled out the 2021 IL-1040 tax form will receive their rebates automatically.

Those who haven’t filed individual income tax returns and completed the form yet can still claim their rebate by filling out the form online. Residents with dependents must also complete the 2021 Schedule IL-E/EIC form.

Property tax

On top of the income tax rebates, some homeowners may receive more assistance.

Qualified property owners will receive a rebate equal to the property tax credit claimed on their 2021 IL-1040 form, with a maximum payment of up to $300. To be eligible, you must have paid Illinois property taxes in 2021 on your primary residence and your adjust gross income must be $500,000 or less if filing jointly. If filing alone, your income must be $250,000 or less.

Why Is My Refund Different Than The Amount On The Tax Return I Filed

All or part of your refund may have been used to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.

We also may have changed your refund amount because we made changes to your tax return. This may include corrections to any incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit or Child Tax Credit amounts. Youll get a notice explaining the changes. Wheres My Refund? will reflect the reasons for the refund offset or different refund amount when it relates to a change in your tax return.

Tax Topic 203, Refund Offsets for Unpaid Child Support, Certain Federal and State Debts, and Unemployment Compensation Debts has more information about refund offsets.

When Will My Refund Be Available

Keep in mind that it may take a few days for your financial institution to make your deposit available to you, or it may take several days for the check to arrive in the mail. Keep this in mind when planning to use your tax refund. The IRS states to allow for five additional days for the funds to become available to you. In almost all cases, a direct deposit will get you your tax refund more quickly than in five days, and in some cases, it will be available immediately.

How To Check The Status Of Your Refund

Luckily, you dont have to twiddle your thumbs while waiting an unspecified time for your tax refund.

The IRS has created a handy app called IRS2Go that tracks the status of your tax refund for you. Theres also a web version called Wheres My Refund that will also give you an update on your refund.

Both require that you input basic information like social security number, filing status, and the total of your refund.

They send daily notifications to taxpayers that they can personalize, with updates on when your return is received, approved and payment is sent. These will start either 24 hours after your taxes were e-filed, or four weeks after your paper-filed taxes are received by the IRS.

Youll only get a date for when your refund will be paid after it has been processed and approved.

After the sent notification comes through, youll then have to follow up with your banking institution or wait for the paper check in the mail.

File Electronically And Choose Direct Deposit

Mutual Fund Taxation

To speed refunds, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2021 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing.

Most individual taxpayers file IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR once they receive Forms W-2 and other earnings information from their employers, issuers like state agencies and payers. The IRS has incorporated recent changes to the tax laws into the forms and instructions and shared the updates with its partners who develop the software used by individuals and tax professionals to prepare and file their returns. Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and the associated instructions are available now on IRS.gov. For the latest IRS forms and instructions, visit the IRS website at IRS.gov/forms .

Tax Returns: Wheres My 2020 Tax Refund How To Track Down Your Refund Check

You have bought an expensive new toy in expectation of your tax refund, and are now desperately waiting for the refund to arrive before the repo man and his large friend Vito come to visit. How can you find out the status of your refund at any time to estimate whether you need to make a run for it?

A more likely scenario is that you are just curious about your refund, and would like to check the status periodically.

In either case, regardless of who prepared your taxes, you need to go through the IRS website to get your answer. Under the Refunds tab at www.irs.gov, you can select the Wheres My Tax Refund? link and find out the latest on your return. The site is only updated once every 24 hours and is also available in Spanish.

If you e-filed, you can check the status within 24 hours after the submission, but on a traditional paper return, you will have to wait 21 days or more before checking. This process cannot be accelerated through the IRS or any third-party tax preparers. The majority of taxpayers receive a refund, and we understand those filers want to know when their refund will be issued, says Former IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. Our Wheres My Refund? tool continues to be the best way for taxpayers to get the latest information.

The IRS website states that typical refunds take less than 21 calendar days. However, new regulations may delay the refund payments.

How To Use The Tax Refund Chart:

  • Use the left-hand column to look up the date your tax return was accepted by the IRS
  • Use the middle or right column to look up when you should receive your refund .

If you filed your taxes with e-File, you should receive a confirmation that your federal tax return was accepted by the IRS. This date will go in the left column. If you didnt file your taxes electronically, then this chart may not be useful for you for two reasons: you wont have a confirmation date regarding when your tax return was accepted, and paper tax returns are manually entered by IRS employees, so the process takes longer.

You will also note that this chart covers dates beyond the traditional filing date. If you file after April 18, 2022, then you should file a tax extension request. Its simple to do and can potentially save you a lot of money in penalties.

Note: Military members deployed during the tax year may be eligible for additional tax deadline extensions.

Getting Refunds Within 21 Days Of Filing

If all goes well, though, taxpayers who e-file can receive their refunds via direct deposit as quickly as one week after filing based on previous years’ processing time, according to trade publication CPA Advisor.

It’s important to note that processing time typically slows down as the tax season gets underway and the IRS handles more returns, the publication added.

In the meantime, tax experts say there are some steps that taxpayers can take to help ensure a quick tax refund, which is even more important this year given that the IRS is starting with a backlog. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins issued a report to Congress in January that warned she is “deeply concerned about the upcoming filing season” given the backlog, among other issues.

“The first thing you know if you are going to cook a meal, you have to have the kitchen cleaned up from the last meal,” said Mark W. Everson, vice chairman at Alliantgroup and former Commissioner of the IRS. “It just snowballs into a terrible situation.”

Delays in processing tax returns count as one of the agency’s most pressing problems, Collins said in her report, which described an agency in crisis.

Americans are hearing the message: Potential IRS processing delays ranked second among the three top concerns of people who are expecting a refund from the IRS this year, according to a Bankrate.com poll of almost 2,500 people released February 22.

Irs Transcript For Amended Return Status And Refund Payment Date

In addition to using the WMAR tool, you can also see your official IRS Tax transcript for your amended return processing and refund payment.

This can provide useful insight, per the screenshot below, if the above methods are not providing you with updated or detailed enough information

As you can see above, transcript codes 971 and 977 on your tax transcript show that your amended return was received and is being processed by the IRS.

However you will need to wait till you see code 960 which will be the date an IRS agent was assigned and starts reviewing/processing your amended return, which a lot of times is a highly manual process.

Like transaction codes for regular returns, you may see code 971 if a notice is issued around your return. This could require you at times to provide additional information to the IRS, for which instructions will be provided in the notice/letter.

Once the processing is completed by the IRS, you will see code 846 on your return. Note the date as well, as this will also be correlated to when you get your direct deposit or check. Generally you should receive your refund payment within 2 to 5 days of this date.

If you were due a refund, which was delayed due to IRS processing, you will also see the interest amount credited to your account. This may come as a separate payment to your refund.

Rettig noted that IRS employees continue to work hard on critical areas affected by the pandemic, including processing of tax returns from last year and record levels of phone calls coming in.

“In many areas, we are unable to deliver the amount of service and enforcement that our taxpayers and tax system deserves and needs. This is frustrating for taxpayers, for IRS employees and for me,” Rettig said. “IRS employees want to do more, and we will continue in 2022 to do everything possible with the resources available to us. And we will continue to look for ways to improve. We want to deliver as much as possible while also protecting the health and safety of our employees and taxpayers. Additional resources are essential to helping our employees do more in 2022 and beyond.”

The IRS continues to reduce the inventory of prior-year individual tax returns that have not been fully processed. As of December 3, 2021, the IRS has processed nearly 169 million tax returns. All paper and electronic individual 2020 refund returns received prior to April 2021 have been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review.

Taxpayers generally will not need to wait for their 2020 return to be fully processed to file their 2021 tax returns and can file when they are ready.
