Fastest Way To Receive Your Refund
Judging by the estimated times mentioned above, the obvious fastest route is to submit your taxes digitally using either tax software or Free File fillable forms and opting for the direct deposit into your bank account.
The slowest route is opting for a paper check, regardless of whether you e-filed or mailed your tax return to the IRS. This can also be affected by any disasters or weather-related events that could have a serious impact on the postal service.

In some cases debts owed to certain State, local, and county agencies will be collected from an individual income tax refund. If the agency files a claim with the Department for a debt of at least $50.00 and the refund is at least $50.00, the debt will be set off and paid from the refund. Here’s How Long It Will Take To Get Your Tax Refund In 2022
Three in four Americans receive an annual tax refund from the IRS, which often is a family’s biggest check of the year. But with this tax season now in progress, taxpayers could see a repeat of last year’s snarls in processing, when more than 30 million taxpayers had their returns and refunds held up by the IRS.
Treasury Department officials warned in January that this year’s tax season will be a challenge with the IRS starting to process returns on January 24. That’s largely due to the IRS’ sizable backlog of returns from 2021. As of December 31, the agency had 6 million unprocessed individual returns a significant reduction from a backlog of 30 million in May, but far higher than the 1 million unprocessed returns that is more typical around the start of tax season.
That may make taxpayers nervous about delays in 2022, but most Americans should get their refunds within 21 days of filing, according to the IRS. And some taxpayers are already reporting receiving their refunds, according to posts on social media.
However, so far, the typical refund is about $2,300 less than the average refund check of about $2,800 received last year. That could change as the tax season progresses, given that tens of millions of Americans have yet to file. But it could signal that taxpayers could get smaller checks this year, an issue for households already struggling with high inflation.
How Much Will My Tax Refund Be
The money will be returned to eligible taxpayers by the state Department of Revenue in proportion to their personal income tax liability in Massachusetts incurred in the immediately preceding taxable year — Tax Year 2021.
In general, the administration said eligible taxpayers will receive a credit in the form of a refund that is approximately 13% of their Massachusetts Tax Year 2021 personal income tax liability. However, that percentage is just a preliminary estimate and could still change before it is finalized in late October, once all 2021 tax returns have been filed.

Whats Taking So Long To Receive Refunds
If you dont receive your refund in 21 days, your tax return might need further review. This may happen if your return was incomplete or incorrect. The IRS may send you instructions through the mail if it needs additional information in order to process your return.
You may also experience delays if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. Under the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015, the IRS is required to hold tax returns for folks who claimed those credits until Feb. 15. If you claimed either of those tax breaks, a PATH Act message may appear when you use the Wheres My Refund? tool.
If you havent received your refund and youre becoming impatient, calling the IRS will likely not help. Its best to avoid contacting the IRS directly unless the Wheres My Refund? tool prompted you to do so or its been 21 days since you filed your tax return electronically .
When Will Californians Receive The Inflation Relief Payment
The California Franchise Tax Board expects to send 90 percent of the direct deposit payments for the Middle-Class Tax Refund in October 2022.
Those who received the first or second Golden State Stimulus via direct deposit can expect to see the money in their account between 7 October and 25 October. The remaining direct deposits will be issued between 28 October and 14 November 2022.
Starting 25 October, the CFTB expects to mail debit cards for the tax rebate through 10 December 2022 to those that received the GSS I and II. The remaining debit cards will be sent by 15 January 2023, but with the expectation that 95 percent of all direct deposit and debit card holders will be issued before the end of the year.
California is providing free, nutritious meals to all K 12 students and our students are healthier, happier, and better prepared for success.
Under the tax rebate plan, Californians earning as much as $75,000 for individuals or $150,000 for joint filers would receive $350 per taxpayer, plus an additional $350 if they have at least one dependent. A single parent would therefore receive $700, and two-parent families would receive $1,050.
People making more than $250,000 or $500,000 for joint filers will not receive a rebate.

When You Should Call The Irs
The IRS online tools are all that most people need to track the status of a tax refund. But there are some exceptions. You might need to give the IRS a call in the following situations:
- Wheres My Refund?,Wheres My Amended Return?, or IRS2Go directs you to call.
- Its been more than 21 days since you filed electronically and youre eager to know the status of your refund or worried about theft or fraud.
- Its been more than 20 weeks since you mailed an amended tax return.
Keep in mind that calling the IRS wont speed up the processing of your refund. According to the IRS, if youre eager to know when your refund will arrive, youre better off using one of its online tracking tools. The IRS updates the status of refunds daily, generally overnight, so checking an online tool multiple times throughout the day probably wont be helpful.
Remember, phone representatives at the IRS can only research the status of your refund 21 days after you file electronically, six weeks after you mail a paper return, or 16 weeks after you mail an amended return.
Why Do I See A Tax Topic 151 Tax Topic 152 Or Irs Error Message
Although the Where’s My Refund tool typically shows a status of Received, Approved or Sent, there are a variety of other messages some users may see.
One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, indicating you’re likely getting a refund but it hasn’t been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.
The delay could be an automated message for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit sent because of additional fraud protection steps.
Tax Topic 151 means your tax return is now under review by the IRS. The agency either needs to verify certain credits or dependents, or it has determined that your tax refund will be reduced to pay money that it believes you owe. You’ll need to wait about four weeks to receive a notice from the IRS explaining what you need to do to resolve the status.
There are other IRS refund codes that a small percentage of tax filers receive, indicating freezes, math errors on tax returns or undelivered checks. The College Investor offers a list of IRS refund reference codes and errors and their meaning.

Tax Filing Season Begins Jan 24 Irs Outlines Refund Timing And What To Expect In Advance Of April 18 Tax Deadline
IR-2022-08, January 10, 2022
WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will start on Monday, January 24, 2022, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2021 tax year returns.
The January 24 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to perform programming and testing that is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly. Updated programming helps ensure that eligible people can claim the proper amount of the Child Tax Credit after comparing their 2021 advance credits and claim any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.
“Planning for the nation’s filing season process is a massive undertaking, and IRS teams have been working non-stop these past several months to prepare,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “The pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund don’t face processing delays. Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.”

Taxpayers with dependents will receive an extra $350, regardless of the total number of dependents.
In other words, a couple that earns a combined $125,000 and has two children would qualify for $350 per adult plus $350 for their children, for a total of $1,050.

How To Track Your State Tax Refund
State taxes work differently from federal taxes because each state manages its system a little differently. To check the status of your state tax refund, youll need the same information you need to check your federal tax refund: your Social Security number and your refund amount.
Your states tax website should have an option on the page to track your taxes, similarly to the federal system. Most states pages will say, Wheres My Refund? Follow the prompts there to track your state tax refund.
The amount of time it takes to get your refund also varies by state, and some take several weeks. Once youve crossed the amount of expected time it takes, then you potentially have the option to call your state tax office to locate your return, get a status update and an idea of when you might receive your refund. You can find all this information on your states local tax page.

- The Where’s My Refund? tool tells the taxpayer to contact the IRS.

Are There Any Expected Tax Refund Delays
Yes, tax refund delays are common. The IRS is required by federal law to withhold tax refunds for taxpayers who claim Earned Income Tax Credits and Additional Child Tax Credit until at least Feb. 15, 2022. Keep in mind it can still take a week to receive your refund after the IRS releases it. So some people who file early may experience delays while awaiting their refunds. Refunds should be processed normally after this date.
Note: There may be delays for the 2021 tax year. The IRS continues to work through a backlog of tax returns , including those with errors and amended returns.
The IRS recommends filing your tax return electronically for faster processing and tax refund payments.
Also note that new identity theft protections and anti-fraud measures may hold up some refunds, as some federal tax returns may be held for further review.
