How Do I Amend My State Tax Return
You can amend your state tax return in two simple steps:
Like the IRS, states typically use a special form for an amended return. Many states also use the X suffix for the form number. Some states allow you to e-file amended returns while others require that you file a paper return.
For example, California uses Schedule X. Other states do not. The Hawaii form, for example, is Schedule AMD.
Don’t forget to attach a copy of your amended federal return to your amended state return, if the state requires it, as is usually the case.

How To Change Information Submitted By Mail

You can also make changes to your tax return by mail. Complete and submit a T1 adjustment request form. If you prefer to submit your changes to the CRA by mail, include supporting documentation, such as receipts, that supports the change you are requesting in your tax return and your original claim.
When mailing your change request to your tax centre, include the T1 adjustment form or a signed letter outlining your request. Include the tax years you are requesting the change for. Also, include your Social Insurance number, your mailing address and the best phone number to reach you during regular business hours.
You can download a copy of the T1 adjustment form online on the CRA website. The processing time for changes submitted by mail is about eight weeks. It may take the CRA longer to process your request if it is submitted in later summer or fall, or if your request needs further review or additional documentation.

But the IRS doesnt always need everything. You should only attach documents that clearly support the change youre making to the return. For example, if you just found a charitable contribution statement, you may want to attach it to your amended return to provide a pre-emptive answer to the IRS. Doing so could help prevent an audit.

You Can File An Amended Tax Return On Your Own
People with simple tax situations and small changes might be able to file an amended tax return on their own. Many major tax software packages include modules that will file an amended tax return. Many tax preparers are happy to file amended returns as well.
And note: Amending your federal tax return could mean having to amend your state tax return, too.
Submit Your Amended Forms

Beginning with the 2019 tax year, the IRS allows you to e-file amended tax returns if you filed the original return electronically and provided that your tax software supplier supports electronically filing amended returns. To amend a return for 2018 or earlier, you’ll need to print the completed Form 1040-X and any other forms you’re amending. Attach any necessary supporting documentation, such as:
- Any new or amended W-2s or 1099 forms
- Other forms or schedules that changed, such as Schedule A if you updated your itemized deductions
- Any notices that you received from the IRS regarding your amended return
Mail all the forms and documents to the address provided in the instructions or electronically file the return if you are able to.
If amending your tax return results in a higher tax bill, you will need to make an additional tax payment. You can mail a check with the amendment or go online and make a payment at the IRS website after logging into their system. By making a payment now instead of waiting for the IRS to send an invoice, you can minimize the interest and penalties you’ll owe.
Keep in mind that if you file an amended tax return on paper rather the e-filing, it can take the IRS eight weeks or longer to process the amendment. You can check the status of your amended return using the IRS’ Where’s My Amended Return? Wait about three weeks from the date you mailed your return for the information to show up in the IRS system.

You cannot amend 2021 yet.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etcDO NOT change your return while it is pending. The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
