Helpful Reminders When Checking Your Amended Returns Status

How to Check the Status of Your Amended Refund – Tax Tip Tuesday #SHORTS

Sometimes the process isnt completely straightforward, especially if further adjustments need to be made or the IRS has issues with what you submitted. Here are some important reminders when youre figuring out how to track your amended tax return:

  • The IRS will send you a notice if they dont agree with the changes in your amended return. This notice is called a notice of claim disallowance.
  • Dont file a second tax return or call the IRS if the full 16 weeks havent passed since you filed your amended return .
  • Dont try to check your amended returns status online until its been three weeks since you filed the amended return. This is how long it can take for your amended return to show up in the IRSs system.
  • The IRS may take longer than 16 weeks if there are issues with the amended return, including the following:
  • There are errors on the amendment
  • The amended return is incomplete
  • You forgot to sign the amended return
  • They are requesting more information from you and returning the amendment
  • There is an identity theft or fraud issue
  • The amended return requires review of an appeal or reconsideration of a decision
  • The same processing-time guidelines apply to both paper and electronic amended returns
  • Direct deposits arent allowed for amended returns, according to the IRS

How The Calculation Works For A Single Taxpayer

  • Figure out your taxable income: gross income minus deduction.
  • Everyone pays a 10% federal-income tax rate on their first $9,875 of taxable income.
  • Everyone pays a 12% federal-income tax rate on their next $9,876 to $40,125 of taxable income.
  • Everyone pays a 22% federal-income tax rate on their next $40,126 to $85,525 of taxable income.
  • And so on and so forth.
  • One notable thing about this kind of tax setup is that the amount of taxes owed by someone steadily increases as that personâs amount of income increases. Itâs not a monumental change when people jump from one tax bracket to another.

    Answers to your tax questions

Letâs run through how this would work for an imaginary person calculating taxes for 2020: John, who earns $40,000. To keep it simple, letâs say he makes all his money from his work salary, has no dependents, and no itemized deductions.

For his 2020 taxes, John would subtract the standard deduction and take zero personal exemptions, since they were eliminated with the GOP tax law

That makes his taxable income $27,600, putting him in both the 10% and 12% tax brackets.

Hereâs how to estimate how much he would owe in taxes:
