So Can You Tell Me How To Get An Efin

Do-It-Yourself Free Tax Preparation

Its a 3-step process. Heres the process to obtain an EFIN:

1. Create an IRS e-Services account on the IRS website.

2. Complete and submit your application to become an authorized IRS e-file provider. It can take up to 45 days for the IRS to approve an e-file application, so plan accordingly. All applicants must provide the following:

  • Identification information for your firm
  • Information about each Principal and Responsible Official in your organization
  • Your e-file provider option

If the Principal or Responsible Official is a certified or licensed professional, such as an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent, they must provide their current professional status information.

All other applicants must provide a fingerprint card, which can be arranged by calling the IRS toll-free at 866-255-0654. If you need to be fingerprinted, work with a trained professional. There are commercial services, but your local police station will likely provide this service for a modest fee. Then mail the signed and completed card to the IRS.

3. Pass a suitability check. After you submit your application and related documents, the IRS will conduct a suitability check on the firm and each person listed on your application as either a Principal or Responsible Official. This may include: a credit check a tax compliance check a criminal background check and a check for prior non-compliance with IRS e-file requirements. Once approved, you will receive an acceptance letter from the IRS with your EFIN.

What Are The Irs E

The IRS takes the sanctity of the e-file system very seriously, and it has become an area of increased scrutiny, mainly because this is a high-risk area for potential hacking and fraud. As a result, its a little more work for a preparer to complete this process.

In many ways, e-file requirements are like acquiring a PTIN. E-file requirements ask for two additional security measures.

First, a professional certification is required, as well as an official copy of your fingerprints. Once youve submitted the online documents and sent in your fingerprints, you will receive an electronic filing identification number . Then you are ready to access the portal to submit e-filings.

If a preparer prepares less than ten returns, they are not required to e-file. If they have filed more than ten returns in a given year, they are required to e-file every single return they prepare. While there are some exceptions, they are rare.

Why Was The Free File Alliance Formed

In November of 2001, the Office of Management and Budget’s Quicksilver Task Force established 24 e-government initiatives that were a part of the President’s Management Agenda. These initiatives were designed to improve government to government, government to business and government to citizen electronic capabilities.

One initiative, IRS Free File, instructed the IRS to provide free and secure online tax return preparation and filing services to taxpayers. In accordance with this OMB directive, the IRS worked in partnership with the tax software industry to develop a solution. The result was the formation of the Free File Alliance, LLC.

Interest and dividend statements from banks . Health insurance exemption certificate, if received. A copy of last years federal and state returns, if available. Being proactive can help you minimize your tax bill and hopefully maximize your return. Consider important questions about tax deductions and tax credits you may be able to claim.

  • Have you contributed all you can to your retirement accounts, such as an employer-sponsored 401 or your IRA?
  • Can you add to your health-savings account?
  • Are you able to make any additional charitable donations?
  • How much did you pay in interest toward student loans?
  • Did you have higher-education expenses?
  • Did you have enough tax withheld from your paycheck, or if youre self-employed did you pay enough in estimated tax payments?

Be mindful of deadlines for tax deductions. In some cases such as a charitable contribution you have to take action by Dec. 31 of the tax year to claim the deduction. Others, like making a contribution to an IRA, may give you until Tax Day to act. And dont forget that your federal tax return might not be the only one you have to file. Depending on where you live or work and how much income including passive income you have, you may need to file a state tax return as well.

Consider A Free Online Tax

When doing your own taxes, you could do it by hand and mail in your return, or you could choose to e-file. For speed, accuracy and convenience, its hard to beat e-filing. Plus if you pair e-filing with direct deposit, youll probably get your refund faster than filing paper forms by mail.

Plenty of software providers and online services provide e-filing. Some may advertise free filing, but often theres a catch. Some allow you to file your federal return for free but then charge you for the state return. Some allow you to file for free if you take the standard deduction but charge you if you want to itemize. And some may even charge you if you have income reported on forms other than W-2s.

There can be many caveats to free filing software, so its important to understand what fees you might end up paying.

Llc Taxed As S Corp Or C Corp

As an alternative, an LLC can choose to be taxed as a corporation by filing Form 8832, Entity Classification Election, with the IRS.

An LLC can also file a further election to be taxed as an S corporation. Corporate taxation can be more complicated and its a good idea to consult an accountant before choosing to be taxed as a corporation. Some of the reasons an LLC might choose corporate taxation include:

  • You plan to leave a substantial amount of money in the business each year to finance expansion or for other reasons.
  • Your profits are far greater than the amount the owner/employees should reasonably make in salary and you want to minimize self-employment taxes.

An LLC taxed as a C corporation files a corporate income tax return each year. The shareholders also report any salary and dividends they receive on their personal tax returns.

An LLC taxed as an S corporation follows a procedure similar to a partnership, filing an informational return and providing members with a Schedule K-1 form showing their share of the profits . The members then report that income on Schedule E of their personal tax returns.

How Are Llcs Taxed

Because LLCs are a relatively new type of business entity, the Internal Revenue Service has not established a tax classification for them. Therefore, while there are forms and procedures for corporate tax returns, there is no such thing as an LLC tax return form.

That doesnt mean that limited liability company income isnt taxed. It just means that LLCs are taxed as though they were a different kind of entity.

If your LLC has only one owner , the IRS will automatically treat your LLC like a sole proprietorship. If your LLC has more than one member, the IRS automatically treats it like a general partnership.

However, if youd prefer to have your LLC taxed like a corporation, you can change its tax status by filing a form with the IRS.

What Are The Most Common Tax Forms And Types Of Tax Returns Prepared By A Tax Preparer

Depending on levels of experience, your client roster, and the specifics of your business, the types of tax returns a preparer will work on can range from an Individual Income Tax Return, Form 1040 to a Corporation Income Tax Return, Form 1120 to interpreting complex partnership agreements. However, most tax forms will break down into two different groups:

  • Individual forms, such as 1040.
  • Business returns, including corporations, partnerships, trusts, not for profit exempt organizations.

Most preparers will usually focus on 1040s/individual tax preparations when starting out. This is generally because theyre easier to prepare and, honestly, easier clients to get. For some preparers, staying 1040 focused is a career choice, doing a little bit of business work as it arises from current clients.

However, often tax preparers are looking to get more business work, and their 1040 clients are a bridge to that career goal. Doing individual returns gets cash flow underway. Over time, they can get enough money and clients to transition to a more business-focused client list.

File Using A Tax Program

How to file taxes: A step by step explainer

Most Americans who do their own taxes choose to use tax preparation software. Some of the benefits of choosing a tax software program include:

  • Youre less likely to make a mistake. Mistakes on your tax return can be costly from audits to additional fees to missed deductibles and credits. Carelessness can cost you when filing your taxes. Tax software programs make it less likely that youll make an expensive error on your return.
  • Youll save time. The tax code of the United States is over 70,000 pages long and has sextupled in length since 1955. Though most of this tax code does not apply to the individual filing taxes, it can still take a long time to sift through over 10 million words worth of tax laws to find relevant materials. Tax software distills the overly-complicated tax code to guide users with a simple Q& A style format that finds deductions and fills out all necessary forms.
  • You may be able to file with a free federal version. If cost is high on your list of concerns, know that most major tax software manufacturers offer a free edition to help users fill out federal income tax files.

If youll be using a tax software program to help you file your returns, youll need to choose a provider first. From industry standards like Intuit TurboTax to save-as-you-go programs like TaxAct, there are a number of software options and packages currently available on the market to suit every individuals needs.

What Does A Tax Preparer Do

Most tax preparers prepare, file, or assist with general tax forms. Beyond these basic services, a tax preparer can also defend a taxpayer with the IRS. This includes audits and tax court issues. However, the extent of what a tax preparer can do is based on their credentials and whether they have representation rights.

In a way, tax preparers are asked to serve two masters their clients and the IRS. They must assist their clients in complying with the state and federal tax codes, while simultaneously minimizing the clients tax burden. While they are hired to serve their client, they must also diligently remember their obligation to the IRS and not break any laws or help others file a fraudulent return.
