What’s On A Tax Transcript

A transcript displays your tax information specific to the type of tax transcript you request.

The IRS is responsible for protecting and securing taxpayer information. Because of data thefts outside the tax system, cybercriminals often attempt to impersonate taxpayers and tax professionals. Thieves attempt to gain access to transcript data which can help them file fraudulent tax returns or steal additional data of other individuals and businesses listed on transcripts.

The IRS better protects your information from identity theft by partially masking the personally identifiable information of everyone listed on transcripts. All financial entries remain fully visible to assist with tax preparation, tax representation and income verification. Anyone with a need to know will be able to identify the taxpayer associated with the transcript based on the data that still displays.

Are There Other Ways To Get Tax Records

If youre looking for your tax records and you used tax software, your tax software provider may have them on file depending on which provider you used and what program you purchased. If you used a tax preparer, he or she may still have your tax returns on file as well.

You may also need old tax information to amend a prior-year tax return, compare it to your current year tax return, or defend yourself in the case of an Internal Revenue Service audit.

While you should save a copy of your business tax returns for a minimum of seven years, if a situation arises and you need to access an old tax document you do not have in your possession, what should you do?

Determine Deductions To Reduce Taxable Income

Can you e-file old tax returns? | TCC

You can typically reduce your tax bill with various deductions. Just because you are filing your return late doesnt mean you forfeit all of the deductions you could have taken. If you plan on itemizing deductions, you need to obtain whatever documentation you have that supports each deduction and complete Schedule A for the appropriate tax year.

If you dont have this, you can usually claim the standard deduction for each of those years. You can also reduce your tax by claiming deductions and credits for any dependents you were eligible to claim for the tax years. You need the names and Social Security numbers for each dependent you claim.

    IRS Tax Tip 2021-33, March 11, 2021

Taxpayers who didn’t save a copy of their prior year’s tax return, but now need it, have a few options to get the information. Individuals should generally keep copies of their tax returns and any documents for at least three years after they file.

If a taxpayer doesn’t have this information here’s how they can get it:

Income Tax Calculator: Estimate Your Taxes

For example, some years ago I received a letter from the IRS saying it couldnt find a tax return from one of my businesses from five years earlier. I still dont know why they were looking for that five-year-old return at that time, but they were and couldn’t find it. Apparently, they found the returns for the years before and after, but the one year was missing. The letter said if I already filed the return, I should send a copy. Otherwise, they would assume I never filed the return and I would have two options. One option was to use my existing records to prepare and file a return. Of course, Id had to pay the penalties and interest for filing a return late. The other option was for the IRS to use its records to prepare a return for the business.

Of course, I had filed a return and had a copy of it. I made a copy and mailed it in. But if I had followed the three-year rule, Id have thrown away the five-year old return and would have to do a lot of work to recreate it.

Of course, if you mailed a return, you cant rely on the U.S.P.S to have delivered it.

Otherwise, theres no statute of limitations. The IRS can ask about that old tax year whenever it wants to. If an IRS auditor is looking at your return from three years ago and cant find a record of your return from the year before that, its easy for the auditor to add that to the list of issues in the audit.
