Can I File My Taxes For Free What’s The Catch

H& R Block: Tax Extensions

There are two main ways to file your taxes for free. The first is through the IRS’ “File Free” program, which includes private companies that provide their services for free in partnership with the IRS. To qualify, you need to earn less than $72,000 in adjusted gross income.

The second is through the free programs of non-alliance members, like Intuit’s TurboTax and H& R Block. These private services offer free products for those with simple filing situations, and as long as you don’t have complications like investment income or rental property income, you can stick with the free products all the way through filing.

Note, however, that Intuit and other companies will often try to upsell you on other products throughout the process. Before signing up for a higher-tier product you hadn’t planned on, make sure you really need it.

What To Do If You Owe Taxes

When you file your extension, youll need to include an estimate of your taxes owed on the form, which can help you determine the payment amount you should submit when filing. Use last years tax return, along with your W-2 and forms for other income sources to estimate.

The IRS offers a tax calculator to help you figure out your total tax obligation using your pay statements most recent tax return. To determine what you still owe, subtract any amount youve already paid toward taxes.

If you submit your estimated payment through IRS Direct Pay and indicate that the payment is for an extension, the IRS will automatically count your payment as an extension, even if you havent filed Form 4868.

If you dont have the money to pay what you owe in full right now, any amount that you are able to contribute can help reduce the penalties and interest youll be charged in the future.

If you are in a tough spot and dont know if youll owe because you havent had a chance to get your documents together, the best thing to do is to file an extension with both the IRS and your state and make an extension payment that way youll avoid penalties, says Ally-Jane Ayers, CFP, co-founder and financial planner at Brooklyn FI.

For further flexibility, take time to apply for a short-term payment plan or long-term installment agreement with the IRS to spread your balance out over time with a lower monthly payment.

What Should I Know About Filing Taxes This Year

There were multiple changes from last year to this years filings that may affect your return, though if youre like most people, its not as much as you think. For one, if you were unemployed last year and were on unemployment, you will still likely have to pay taxes on that unemployment income, compared to 2020 when there was at least some protection from taxes on unemployment.

Most people will be filing for a standard deduction, which was adjusted for inflation by $150 up to $12,550 individually or $25,100 for those filing jointly.

If you were one of those lucky few who managed to get your student loans forgiven in 2021, then you wont owe taxes on those loans going forward thanks to the American Rescue Plan. This new law lasts until 2025, so better start thinking about how you can get or at least advocate for forgiveness, if at all possible, to save the most on that damned degree.

Tax brackets were changed, and some people may find that if they were in one bracket, they were bumped down to a lower bracket. For most people, this wont change a single thing about how you file, but it remains something to note.

Do I Have To Pay Us Taxes If I Live Abroad

Expats are required to file U.S. tax returns each year, but sometimes tax benefits available to them result in no U.S. taxes owed. However, if any of the following situations apply to you, its possible that you may still owe U.S. taxes.

  • You live and work in a country with lower tax rates than the U.S.
  • Youre not taxed on your foreign investments, or
  • You still receive income from U.S. sources

What To Do If You Expect A Refund

Working as a Tax Pro at H& R Block

Even if you dont owe any money to the IRS, you should still make sure your return is filed by the deadline to receive your refund and any stimulus money you may still be owed as quickly as possible.

Still, prepare to be patient: The IRS continues to face processing delays due to its large backlog and implementation of last-minute tax changes. Double check your return for any mistakes or inaccuracies to best ensure its processed and your refund issued as quickly as possible.

After you file, you can check the status of your refund using the Wheres My Refund tool on the IRS website.

How Do I Get A Tax Extension

Most of the free file options listed above also allow you to submit for the extension. You can log onto one of these sites and answer the questions to submit for the extension.

This is effectively an option for you to note your tax liability and then pay what you owe. The IRS will charge a 3% interest on the unpaid balance until the full amount gets submitted, and there will likely be further fees for every month they go unpaid.

This extension gives you until October 15 to file your taxes. You will need to note what you already paid on the extension when you file your taxes later this year.

If you dont want to use those e-file platforms, youll need to submit a form to the IRS. Since its already Tax Day, your best option would be filing the form online through the e-file providers.

There is no penalty for filing the form last minute, but there can certainly be repercussions if you fail to file anything at all. You should receive notification that the extension application has been filed. There are ways to track the status of your application as well.

Tax Rules Changed By Covid Relief

H& R Block Basic 2013 Tax Software for Windows 1013800

Pandemic-related relief changed many rules for 2021 tax returns. On 2021 returns, there’s no longer an age cap or ceiling set at 64 or younger for workers to qualify for the earned income tax credit. It’s a one-time-only deal, but the AARP is pushing to extend the tax break for older workers beyond 2021 tax returns.

The earned income credit has been expanded so that the credit can apply on 2021 federal returns to workers who are 65 or older, even if they do not have dependent children, thanks to the American Rescue Plan passed last year.

It now also applies to childless workers from age 19 to 24 who are not half-time or full-time students and are claimed as dependents on their parents’ tax return.

Unemployment Benefits With A Tax Break In 2022

Taxpayers got a surprise tax break on unemployment benefits received only in 2020, as part of a $1.9 trillion stimulus package signed into law in March 2021.

As part of the American Rescue Plan, many taxpayers were no longer required to pay taxes on up to $10,200 in unemployment benefits received in 2020. The exclusion was up to $10,200 of jobless benefits for each spouse for married couples filing jointly.

When Are Taxes Due This Year

Federal tax returns for 2021 are due this year on Friday, April 18, 2022. Residents of Massachusetts and Maine get an extra day — their tax returns are due April 19 because they celebrate Patriots’ Day on April 18.

Some taxpayers in Colorado, Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee who live in areas affected by natural disasters have an extended tax filing deadline of May 16. You can see which counties are included in the extension on the IRS disaster relief page.

Unlike last year, filing deadlines were not extended in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ll keep you updated if tax deadlines change at all this year.

Last Day To File Taxes In 2022 Has The Tax Deadline Been Extended

The deadline to file 2021 income tax returns is Monday, April 18, for most people, three days later than the normal April 15 deadline for filing taxes.

The later date is a result of the Emancipation holiday in the District of Columbia. By law, Washington, D.C., holidays affect tax deadlines for everyone the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers who live in Maine or Massachusetts have until April 19 to file because of the Patriots’ Day holiday celebrated in those states.

The IRS has extended the deadline until May 16 for victims of the late 2021 Colorado wildfires as well as for victims of the December tornadoes in parts of Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The extension applies to various individual and business tax returns and tax payments deadlines.

How Can I File My Taxes

The IRS accepts tax returns filed one of two ways:

  • Through the mail
  • Electronically through e-file
  • A reported 88% of individual tax returns are e-filed per year. Any tax return filed by a tax professional in an H& R Block tax office, using the H& R Block tax software, or through the H& R Block online filing program is usually e-filed. However, you can always choose to have your return printed to mail yourself.

E-file is the quickest filing method and typically helps you receive a tax refund faster.

Despite sites like TurboTax and H& R Blocks near stranglehold on the tax filing market, there are other means of e-filing, although some official options suggested by the IRS are more convoluted than others. The IRS requires that these sites offer a free e-filing option, but there are no real regulation on how much these companies try to upsell you when filing. Gotta love paying for the privilege of givingthe government information it already knows about you.

So if you can, its probably best to find a free service. The IRS does not offer an in-house option to file based on a deal it struck with tax filing companies two decades ago. These sites also have restrictions based on your adjusted yearly income, though most allow for filing if you make $73,000 a year or less. There may also be restrictions based on which state you live in. Some, like TaxActs free version, do not allow for free filing of state taxes.

You can also plug in all the numbers yourself using the IRS form-fillable documents, but that will require you to create an account on the IRS site, which itself can be quite a time consuming hassle as it will require you to have an ID like a drivers license or passport at the ready, and also scan your face to ID.ME. This is also the most lengthy option, and since its already Tax Day, youre best either filing for an extension or using the other tax filing options.
