Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if its been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Wheres My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. Income Tax Refund Information
You can check the status of your current year refund online, or by calling the automated line at 260-7701 or 1-800-218-8160. Be sure you have a copy of your return on hand to verify information. You can also e-mail us at to check on your refund. Remember to include your name, Social Security number and refund amount in your e-mail request.
If youre expecting a tax refund and want it quickly, file electronically instead of using a paper return.
If you choose direct deposit, we will transfer your refund to your bank account within a few days from the date your return is accepted and processed.
We usually process electronically filed tax returns the same day that the return is transmitted to us.

You can hand-deliver your return to a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center under normal circumstances if you can find one located near where you live. You can ask the IRS agent for a stamped receipt upon submitting it.
Walk-ins are no longer accepted as of January 2022, although you can call ahead and make an appointment. Masks are required to protect against COVID-19 if youre located in an area with a high or substantial transmission rate. The six-feet-apart rule remains in place.
