Waiver or reimbursement of the user fees only applies to individual taxpayers with adjusted gross income, as determined for the most recent year for which such information is available, at or below 250% of the applicable federal poverty level that enter into long-term payment plans on or after April 10, 2018. If you are a low-income taxpayer, the user fee is waived if you agree to make electronic debit payments by entering into a Direct Debit Installment Agreement . If you are a low-income taxpayer but are unable to make electronic debit payments by entering into a DDIA, you will be reimbursed the user fee upon the completion of the installment agreement. If the IRS system identifies you as a low-income taxpayer, then the Online Payment Agreement tool will automatically reflect the applicable fee.

Payment apps like PayPal may reach out to you to confirm your tax information, such as your employer identification number, individual tax identification number or Social Security number. If you own a business, you most likely have an EIN, but if you’re a sole proprietor or individual freelance or gig worker, you’ll provide an ITIN or SSN.
If You Freelance Regularly A 1099
Here’s some good news: Receiving a 1099-K can take some of the manual work out of filing your self-employment taxes. Previously, self-employed individuals would receive 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC tax forms from each individual client they worked for, when they earned more than $600.
Now, you may still receive individual 1099-NEC forms if you were paid through direct deposit, check or cash, but your 1099-K will include payments from all clients who paid you through that particular payment app. So, if you work for five clients in 2023, and one pays via direct deposit, while the other four pay you through PayPal, you should receive two tax forms, instead of five. You’d get one 1099-NEC for the direct-deposit client and one 1099-K from PayPal for the other four clients’ payments.
This can save you from spending your time tracking down paperwork and adding up third-party payments.

Acting Irs Commissioner Hopes The Extra Time Clears Up Any Confusion

The Internal Revenue Service announced Friday a one-year delay of new reporting requirements for Venmo, Paypal, Cash App or other third-party peer-to-peer payment apps. Online retailers and a number of members of Congress have been calling for a delay of the rule before it takes effect next year.
As part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the rule required people who earned more than $600 on peer-to-peer payment apps to report the figure as income to the IRS. It also required the payment apps to report to the IRS all those who earned more than the allotted threshold. The previous reporting threshold was 200 transactions or $20,000.
Taxpayers are still required to report their total income but payment apps will not need to report to the IRS those customers exceeding the new threshold for the 2022 tax year. The lower reporting threshold requirement will now not take effect till the 2023 reporting tax season, per the IRSs recent announcement.
The IRS and Treasury heard a number of concerns regarding the timeline of implementation of these changes under the American Rescue Plan, Acting IRS Commissioner Doug ODonnell said in a statement. To help smooth the transition and ensure clarity for taxpayers, tax professionals and industry, the IRS will delay implementation of the 1099-K changes.

Items Sold For A Profit On Facebook Marketplace Will Be Taxed But Personal Belongings Sold At A Loss Won’t Be
If you sell personal items for less than you paid for them and collect the money via third-party payment apps, this new legislation won’t affect you. For example, if you buy a couch for your home for $500 and later sell it on Facebook Marketplace for $200, you won’t owe taxes on the sale. That’s because it’s a personal item you’ve sold at a loss. However, you may be required to show documentation of the original purchase to prove that you sold the item at a loss.
But, if you have a side hustle where you buy items and resell them for a profit via PayPal or another digital payment app, then earnings over $600 will be considered taxable and reported to the IRS.
