Tax Filing Season Begins Jan 24 Irs Outlines Refund Timing And What To Expect In Advance Of April 18 Tax Deadline

  • IRS Statements and Announcements
  • IR-2022-08, January 10, 2022

WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will start on Monday, January 24, 2022, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2021 tax year returns.

The January 24 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to perform programming and testing that is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly. Updated programming helps ensure that eligible people can claim the proper amount of the Child Tax Credit after comparing their 2021 advance credits and claim any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.

“Planning for the nation’s filing season process is a massive undertaking, and IRS teams have been working non-stop these past several months to prepare,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “The pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund don’t face processing delays. Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.”

    Texas State Fall 2022 Calendar

The IRS Free File service does just what the name implies lets you file your taxes for free, depending on your adjusted gross income. There are two options:

    • $72,000 or less: You can file your federal taxes for free on a third-party IRS partner site. You can even file your state taxes for free with some partners. Theres nothing to fear you dont even have to do any math. Youll receive guided preparation that will ask you questions and walk you through it, just like on a pay site.
    • Above $72,000: You can still file for free, but only your federal returns, and the service is pretty bare bones. It offers only the most basic guidance and calculations, and youll have to know how to prepare tax forms. Plus, math.

Youll need all the same stuff thats required no matter how you file, like health insurance and mortgage statements, last years AGI, your W2s, 1099s, Social Security benefits and proof of any other income, including unemployment payments. Remember, file on time even if you cant pay your bill. You can request an extension by Tax Day if you need more time to file, but remember that this just a grace period. You wont pay any less. Paying your taxes is never fun but in 2022, it shouldnt require a trip to the post office.

Guide To Tax Day Post Office Hours For Last

Here is a list of post offices offering extended hours on April 15 in every state to guide readers to the right locations to get their returns in on time.

With Tax Day nearly here, many last-minute filers will be scrambling to wrap up their taxes and get them filed by the April 15 deadline. While the majority of taxpayers file by April, the IRS estimates that 28 percent of filers wait until the last 15 days of the tax season. And a portion of those will file on the very last day some will submit tax returns electronically while others will head to the post office on Wednesday to mail their tax return. Failing to do so will result in a late tax return fine and other penalties from the IRS.

On Tax Day, many post office hours are extended and special consideration is made for last-minute filers. But post offices Tax Day hours might still be more limited in 2015 than in years past. As the number of taxpayers who file electronically continues to rise, the number of people filing taxes last-minute has fallen, meaning that the post office has seen less of a necessity to offer extended Tax Day hours. This can make it tricky to know where you can file taxes, even at the last minute.

Post Offices Extend Hours For Tax Deadline

Several post offices across the state of Mississippi will be extending their hours on Tuesday to allow for tax filers to take the last minute opportunity to mail out their documentation.

The following offices will be extending their hours:

    POST OFFICE/STATION
    611 S. Pear Orchard Rd.
    SOUTHAVEN

Collection boxes in front of the buildings will be picked up until midnight.

The U.S. Postal Service recommends the following tips for tax day:

    • If filing on April 18, mail early in the day at any Post Office. Be sure to verify Post Office hours of operation.
    • If depositing returns in a collection box on April 18, double-check the pick-up schedule on the collection box.
    • To ensure getting the April 18 postmark, deposit returns before the last scheduled pick-up time.
    • Affix the correct postage. Some returns include many forms and require additional postage. IRS does not pay postage due and will return items to sender.
    • One ounce for letter size returns is 49 cents for stamp postage, 46 cents for metered postage. The second and third ounces are an additional 21 cents for each ounce, regardless of postage type. Large envelopes or letters weighing over 3.5 ounces are subject to an oversize rate of 98 cents for one ounce and 21 cents per additional ounce.
    • When possible, use the envelope provided by the IRS and be sure to include a return address. If the envelope provided by the IRS is unavailable, be sure to verify the IRS address where returns should be mailed.

Awaiting Processing Of Previous Tax Returns People Can Still File 2021 Returns

Rettig noted that IRS employees continue to work hard on critical areas affected by the pandemic, including processing of tax returns from last year and record levels of phone calls coming in.

“In many areas, we are unable to deliver the amount of service and enforcement that our taxpayers and tax system deserves and needs. This is frustrating for taxpayers, for IRS employees and for me,” Rettig said. “IRS employees want to do more, and we will continue in 2022 to do everything possible with the resources available to us. And we will continue to look for ways to improve. We want to deliver as much as possible while also protecting the health and safety of our employees and taxpayers. Additional resources are essential to helping our employees do more in 2022 and beyond.”

The IRS continues to reduce the inventory of prior-year individual tax returns that have not been fully processed. As of December 3, 2021, the IRS has processed nearly 169 million tax returns. All paper and electronic individual 2020 refund returns received prior to April 2021 have been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review.

Taxpayers generally will not need to wait for their 2020 return to be fully processed to file their 2021 tax returns and can file when they are ready.

Tax Day 202: How To File Your Taxes If You Miss Post Office Hours

The best advice to avoid the heavy hand of the IRS

With the extension given until this Monday, to mail your tax return, it can be sent through the Internet, however, if your intention is to send it through the postal mail, not necessarily all post offices are open late, although some are, however, the suggestion is very clear, send your return electronically, and if you can’t for any reason, ask for an extension.

All this is because in case you want to do it the old fashioned way, then you have to be absolutely sure that your local post office collection hours are before you get there and you can stamp the return, because even if the office is open, maybe the collection will be done until the next day, so you will be in breach of your obligation and the IRS, in that case, most likely, will not have mercy regarding penalties and interest for such breach.

File Electronically And Choose Direct Deposit

    Nsc Calendar 2022

To speed refunds, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2021 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing.

Most individual taxpayers file IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR once they receive Forms W-2 and other earnings information from their employers, issuers like state agencies and payers. The IRS has incorporated recent changes to the tax laws into the forms and instructions and shared the updates with its partners who develop the software used by individuals and tax professionals to prepare and file their returns. Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and the associated instructions are available now on IRS.gov. For the latest IRS forms and instructions, visit the IRS website at IRS.gov/forms .

    Capital Asset Sustainability Fee

Using Capital Asset Sustainability funds to Repair and Maintain Richmond Hill Infrastructure

Richmond Hill is responsible for the repair and maintenance of roads, community centres, trails, watermains and more. The funding for this comes in part from a fee that is added to property tax bills.

Prior to 2019, the Capital Asset Sustainability Fee was applied as a flat fee to all tax accounts in Richmond Hill. In 2019, the fee will transition to a levy on each property, based on a percentage of the Phased-In Assessment Value of a property as determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation .

Administering the levy based on property values is a more equitable approach to infrastructure funding.

Comparable GTA municipalities including Markham, Newmarket, Aurora, Mississauga, Brampton and Burlington use this approach for infrastructure funding and debt repayment.

Here’s Which Las Vegas Post Office Will Be Open Late For Tax Day Monday

Just a heads up: you have until April 18 to file your taxes or ask for an extension. The average refund is $3,200. And a common mistake is people putting the wrong address when dropping their returns in the mail.

CBS Money Watch analyst Jill Schlesinger recently shared tips for those who have yet to file. Schlesinger suggested that people file electronically instead of on paper to save time.

If filing an extension, Schlesinger said that people should be looking for Form 4868 at IRS.gov. This will give people a chance to extend their time to October 17.

However, check to see if you owe any money. You will still have to pay by the tax deadline.

The Internal Revenue Service can assess a penalty for filing late, which is typically 5 percent of the unpaid taxes per month or part of a month that a return is tardy. The fine accrues starting April 18 and will not exceed 25 percent of the total unpaid taxes. If a return is filed more than 60 days after the deadline, the minimum penalty is $205 or 100 percent of the unpaid tax, whichever is smaller.

“For those that wait until April 17th to mail their returns, try to mail as early in the day as possible,” U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Kim Frum said in a statement provided to Newsweek.

Some post offices may offer extended hours on Tax Day to accommodate last-minute filers. Taxpayers should check with their local post office for information on locations staying open late.

The Postal Service’s locator does not include extended hours for April 17, but has contact information for local post offices so consumers can ask about locations with longer hours.

Taxpayers living in densely populated regions such as the greater Los Angeles area, which lists four locations open until midnight, are more likely to find post offices with extended hours on Tax Day.

Some good and bad news Metro #Atlanta post offices will not stay open late on #TaxDay, but several have normal business hours that extend beyond 5 p.m. anyways: .
