The move was part of a $46.5 billion budget signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in April.

The budget Im signing into law today brings real improvements to the lives of working families and sets us up for a stronger fiscal future, Pritzker said in a statement. Investments in stronger schools, modernized airports and newly paved highways, hundreds of thousands of well-paying infrastructure jobs, and a better funded pension system these are the kind of priorities we can invest in when our state is governed responsibly.

The budget plan went into effect on July 1, the start of the states fiscal year.

Important Chicago Illinois Sales Tax Information

Sales tax returns, or The Illinois Department of Revenue Form ST-1, are one of the most commonly audited forms or tax types in our state. One of the reasons for this is that they are difficult to prepare properly. Sales tax is a huge money maker for Springfield. Given the states ever present financial woes, they love to audit these forms. Auditing brings in huge amounts of additional revenues. This is naturally generated when people who dont know what they are doing try to complete their own forms.

One of the difficulties in performing proper accounting for these returns is the basis upon which the form must be completed. Sales tax returns are, by definition, cash basis returns rather than accrual basis. One of the natural difficulties, and usual audit red flags, is the difference between your sales and income tax returns. Please realize that both the sales tax returns and your state income tax returns go to the same agency. If the income between the two sets of forms is extremely different, then naturally the state will probably want to audit to make sure that you are not evading either sales or income taxes.

Chicago Ranks No 2 In The Nation For Combined State And Local Sales Tax

How High Are Excise Tax Collections Where You Live?

The Windy City tied with four other major cities as imposing the nations second highest sales tax on residents among 124 considered. The report warns the citys new status could be costing Chicago businesses their competitive edge.

The city of Chicago ranks No. 2 in the nation among major cities for combined state and local sales tax rates, according to a new report.

The Tax Foundation study indicates these higher sales taxes are driving consumers away from Chicago businesses and into neighboring suburbs.

Chicago tied with four other major cities as imposing the nations second highest sales tax burden on residents as of July 1. Seattle and California cities Fremont, Long Beach and Oakland rounded out the second-place spot.

Tacoma, Wash., claimed No. 1 at 10.30%. Anchorage and Portland tied for the lowest sales tax rate at 0%.

The national study found that sales tax avoidance is most likely to occur in areas with a significantly different sales tax rate than neighboring jurisdictions.

This means major cities with higher sales taxes than surrounding areas are more likely to see an increase in online and cross-border shopping as residents look to avoid paying steep rates.

Given Chicago levies sales taxes on residents more than 25% higher than nearby cities such as Naperville or Wheaton, where rates are 7.75% and 8% respectively, those residents stand to save a lot by shopping elsewhere.
