The Trump administration constructed 453 miles of border wall over four years, and a vast majority of the new barriers reinforced or replaced existing structures. Of those, about 47 miles were new primary barriers. The United States southwestern border with Mexico is over 1,900 miles.

The number of unauthorized migrants stopped at the border could be viewed as a proxy for those who cross undetected. The numbers could also indicate more effective enforcement.

Border patrol agents apprehended roughly 400,000 unauthorized migrants in the 2020 fiscal year. During that year the last full year under Mr. Trump the coronavirus pandemic caused disruptions to travel and migration across the world. Officials also seized about 707,000 pounds of drugs at the southwestern border.

Many other factors beyond border security also affect migration patterns and drug smuggling: the economic and security conditions of the country of origin, the demand and supply for drugs, terrain and climate conditions, among others.

Changes in drug smuggling cannot always be directly linked to changes in border security efforts, the Congressional Research Service has noted.

When Can I Amend My Tax Return

Another example could be someone taking too much of a deduction for state and local taxes . The write-off was limited to $10,000 under the tax overhaul signed in December 2017 by President Donald Trump.

Taxpayers also amend their returns if they had a change in filing status, change in the number of claimed dependents, incorrectly claimed tax credits and deductions or incorrectly reported income, says Daniel Gibson, a partner at New York-based tax and accounting firm EisnerAmper.

If you realize you made a mistake or left out some pertinent information, you should amend your tax return as soon as possible. You dont want to face interest and penalties if an error or oversight led you to underpay your taxes.

If youre unsure about whether to amend a tax return, you can use the IRS Should I File an Amended Return? interactive tool.

The Current And Former Governors Of Arizona Acknowledge A Loss For Lake

Monday Map: Percentage of Each State

The day after Katie Hobbs won the governors election in Arizona, a clash was already developing in the states Republican Party between election deniers who urged Kari Lake to continue to fight Ms. Hobbss election and prominent establishment politicians who said that the race was now over.

Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, called Ms. Hobbs on Tuesday to offer his congratulations, while former Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, said that it was clear that Ms. Lake had lost and that she planned to call to congratulate Ms. Hobbs.

Kari Lake has lost the race, in my opinion. Theres no way for her to have a pathway, Ms. Brewer said in a phone interview. If I was in that position, I probably would concede. Our democracy is so important to what our country and state stands for. We vote people in and we vote people out.

Ms. Lake has made unfounded claims that election officials are incompetent and hinted at wrongdoing, despite pushback from Republican election officials that the process has been accurate and fair. Steve Bannon, the radio host and an early adviser to former President Donald J. Trump, has called on Arizona election officials not to certify the results. But, despite the problems with many vote-counting machines in the Phoenix area, Ms. Brewer, a former secretary of state, said that the election had absolutely been fair and that the results were trustworthy.

As the state continues to send out the direct payments, is there a way to track the progress of your check?

The short answer is no, the Franchise Tax Board says. But to combat frustration with the vague timelines originally laid out, the agency has released more details on when you can expect to receive your direct deposit or debit card.

To find out when youll see your tax refund, you first need to determine if youre getting a direct deposit or a debit card. If you filed your California state taxes electronically in 2020 and received a refund by direct deposit, youll likely get a direct deposit in this case, too. Pretty much everyone else will get a debit card, the state says.

Second, youll need to determine if you received a Golden State Stimulus payment last year, in either round 1 or round 2. Golden State Stimulus recipients of 2021 are first in line to get the Middle Class Tax Refund in 2022.

Theres one final complication: Debit cards are being sent out in smaller batches, organized in alphabetical order by last name. GSS recipients are first up, broken into four groups getting their debit cards in the mail between Oct. 24 and Dec. 10.

No Escalator Moment Is Expected At Mar

PALM BEACH, Fla. Theres no golden escalator this time.

Donald J. Trump on Tuesday night is expected to announce his third official presidential campaign at Mar-a-Lago, his residence and private resort in Florida, in an event that will look and feel different from the first two times he did this.

The most obvious difference: No repeat of the indelible moment from his first announcement, on June 16, 2015, when the moving staircase in Trump Tower gently carried him down to a stage constructed in the buildings atrium.

Instead, Mr. Trump is expected to open his third White House bid in a building that F.B.I. agents searched just three months ago after the former president failed to return highly sensitive government documents after leaving office.

Agents searched the resorts storage room and Mr. Trumps office just a short walk from the ornate ballroom adorned with 15 crystal chandeliers and a half-dozen marble columns where Mr. Trump will speak on Tuesday night.

The documents collected during the search have been at the center of a Justice Department investigation. Mr. Trump has pushed for an early announcement, in part, hoping it will give pause to prosecutors who may be considering criminal charges.

So we begin, Oklahoma, Mr. Trump said that night. We begin our campaign and I just want to thank all of you, you are warriors.
