The stove tax credit is set at 26% for both 2021 and 2022. It will step down to 22 percent in 2023. This provision is part of the BTU Act and was part of the pandemic relief package.
This Wood and Pellet Stove Tax Credit is the most there has ever been in our recent history. The 26% tax credit is calculated from the total cost of the appliance and its installation cost, including the chimney, the floor protection and labor. Past Tax Credits only applied to the purchase of the fireplace. Further down in this article, we will present you with a few scenarios on how generous this program is.
What Is The Wood And Pellet Heater Investment Tax Credit
High-efficiency biomass heating products qualify for a tax credit under Section 25 of the Internal Revenue Code . This 30 percent tax credit capped at $2,000 is available for appliances installed on or after January 1, 2023. CleanFire 300, 500, 700, 900 and Maxim M255 PE models qualify for the credit.
Homeowners that purchase and install a CleanFire or M255 PE model can claim the 30% tax credit, capped at $2,000, by using form 5695 when filing federal income taxes in the year the installation is completed.

Limits On Credit Amount
The IRS allows you to claim a credit for the purchase of a stove burning wood, wood pellets or other biomass fuel. The credit is limited to 10 percent of the purchase price, with a maximum credit amount of $300 on a single purchase . Congress renewed the law authorizing the credit in early 2013, making it retroactive to tax year 2012.
How Does The Tax Credit Work
Wood-burning stoves and heating systems will now qualify for a renewable energy investment tax credit through Section 25D of the Internal Revenue Code. Previously, only solar, geothermal, fuel cell, and small wind systems could qualify for this tax credit. The new tax credit eliminates a previous provision for biomass stoves under IRC Section 25C, which some consumers may have used on their 2020 tax returns.
You must claim the product on the tax return year in which the product installation was completed. If you purchased a wood-burning heating product in 2020 but installed it in 2021, you can claim it on a 2021 tax return.
With the new tax credit, you may see an increase in your tax refund. However, if your federal tax obligation is already low, you may not be able to claim the full tax credit amount.

How Do I Know If The Stove I Am Buying Qualifies For The Federal Tax Credit
The EPA has created and is maintaining the official Wood Stove Database. As you get on the database, click on Most Efficient to start your search. Move the Efficiency Indicator to bring it to 75% efficiency and click on Do Search. This will generate the list of all pellet and wood heaters that are 75 percent efficient and more. If the heater you are shopping for is not on that list, it simply does not qualify for the Federal Tax Credit. It is important that you refer to this list, as this is where the IRS is looking into when auditing.
What Paperwork Do I Need To Keep For My Tax Record
Keep your purchase receipt, including the cost of the furnace and installation. You should also have a copy of the Manufacturers Certification Statement stating the the outdoor furnace qualifies for the credit and is at least 75% efficient . Do All Pellet And Wood Fireplaces Qualify For The Federal Tax Credit
The answer is no. In fact, most wood stoves, inserts and fireplaces on the Market do not qualify. Why? The legislation aimed at helping consumers get more efficient heaters. So, the ITC is requiring the biomass-fueled stoves to boast an HHV* of 75% efficiency or higher. At the time we are writing this article, there were 148 listings of wood heaters approved by EPA. Only 52 of them qualify for the Tax Credit. 51 Pellet Stoves qualify out of 101.

Respect Of The Environment
High-efficiency wood stoves for a safer and cleaner environment
Since May 15th, 2020, wood stoves and inserts being sold had to be meeting much stricter emissions limits. In 10 years, the EPA limits went from 7.5g/hr down to 2g/hr. In the 2020 standard, an official efficiency standard was setup by the EPA. It is called HHV, or Higher Heating Value. This new way to calculate the efficiency of a woodstove is more reflective on the efficiency experienced in the real world.
The HHV efficiency takes the full value of BTU contained in a log as the divider of the BTU transferred inside the room where the wood stove is. Getting a HHV score higher than 70% is an outstanding achievement! The engineers who worked at fine tuning the woodstoves to meet the lower grams per hour combined to efficiencies over 70% have done phenomenal work. That seemed impossible just a few years ago.
How Do I Claim The Sec 25 Credit

Retailers and consumers must keep exact records of any sale or purchase. Retailers should provide a consumer with the manufacturer’s certification statement for the specific product model purchased. A consumer may rely on a manufacturer’s certification statement that their products are qualified energy property. A taxpayer is not required to attach the certification statement to the return on which the credit is claimed. A consumer claiming a credit for the qualified non-business energy property should retain the certification statement as part of the taxpayer’s records.
Manufacturers should make this certification document available to consumers on their website, in the product packaging, or in some other easily accessible manner.

Does Any Wood Stove Qualify
To qualify for the tax credit, you must have purchased and/or installed a biomass-fueled heater with a thermal efficiency of at least 75% per the higher heating value of the fuel. Biomass stoves burn biomass fuel to heat a home or heat water. Biomass fuel includes agricultural crops and trees, wood and wood waste and residues , plants , grasses, residues, and fibers.
**New for 2021:
Beginning in 2021, if you purchase and install a wood or pellet stove or larger residential biomass heating system with a Thermal Efficiency Rating of at least 75%, you will be able to claim a credit that is uncapped and based on the full cost of the unit, in the amount of:
- 26% for systems placed in service between 01/01/2021 through 12/31/2022
- 22% for systems placed in service between 01/0/2023 and 12/31/2023.
The credit must be claimed on the tax return for the year the product installation is completed. Therefore, any product purchased in 2020 that qualifies for the new credit, but is not installed until 2021, should be claimed on your 2021 tax return.

UPDATE:In late December 2019, the biomass stove tax credit was extended for qualifying purchases made before December 31, 2020. Remind consumers that they are able to claim the credit on their 2018 and 2019 returns if they made a qualifying purchase in those tax years.

How Do You Claim Your Federal Tax Credit
You claim the 26% tax credit on your federal income tax return form, starting on the 2021 tax return. The credit is a reduction of the total income tax owed. This is a non-refundable tax credit available for individuals who pay federal taxes.
If your tax owed is reduced to zero by this credit, but you still have money left to claim, it can be carried over to the next tax year to further reduce your tax burden in the future.
You should always consult a tax professional as individual situations may vary.
Paper Filing: The credit can be claimed on IRS Form 5695 under Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit.
