The filing deadline this year is Monday, April 18, because Washington, D.C., observes Emancipation Day on Friday, April 15. By law, the IRS is required to treat D.C. holidays as if they were national holidays for tax-filing purposes. Emancipation Day commemorates the day in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a measure to free enslaved people in D.C.

What If You Miss A Deadline

You’ll probably be hit with a financial penalty, such as an extra interest charge, if you don’t submit a tax return and make any payment that is due by its appropriate deadline. There are two main penalties you may face:

  • Failure-to-file penalty:This penalty for 1040 returns is 5% of the tax due per month as of tax year 2021, up to a cap of 25% overall, with additional fees piling up after 60 days.
  • Failure-to-paypenalty: This penalty is 0.5% for each month, or part of a month, up to a maximum of 25%, of the amount of tax that remains unpaid from the due date of the return until the tax is paid in full.

If both are penalties are applied, the failure-to-file penalty will be reduced by the failure-to-pay penalty amount for that month. If you are on a payment plan, the failure-to-pay penalty is reduced to 0.25% per month during that payment plan schedule. If you don’t pay the taxes you owe within 10 days of receiving a notice from the IRS that says the agency intends to levy, then the failure-to-pay penalty is 1% per month.

Paying a late ITR is punishable under Section 234F of the Income-Tax Act of 1961. Assessees must incur a late filing penalty of up to 5,000. For small taxpayers with taxable income of less than 5 lakh, the punishment is 1,000. Sections 234A, 234B, and 234C impose penalty interest, based on the type of tax payable. Those who submit late returns are likewise prevented from carrying their losses forward. Taxpayers who file a late return are disqualified for interest on I-T refunds, which are paid at a rate of 0.5% per month if the ITR is filed well before due date. An ITR that was submitted late can be updated. Nevertheless, if you file it at the very minute, you will lose the opportunity to file a corrected ITR if you uncover a mistake later. As a result, file earlier or be extra cautious if you submit close to December 31,” said Amit Gupta, MD, SAG Infotech

Key Information To Help Taxpayers

The IRS encourages people to use online resources before calling. Last filing season, as a result of COVID-era tax changes and broader pandemic challenges, the IRS phone systems received more than 145 million calls from January 1 May 17, more than four times more calls than in an average year. In addition to IRS.gov, the IRS has a variety of other free options available to help taxpayers, ranging from free assistance at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly locations across the country to the availability of the IRS Free File program.

“Our phone volumes continue to remain at record-setting levels,” Rettig said. “We urge people to check IRS.gov and establish an online account to help them access information more quickly. We have invested in developing new online capacities to make this a quick and easy way for taxpayers to get the information they need.”

Last year’s average tax refund was more than $2,800. More than 160 million individual tax returns for the 2021 tax year are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the traditional April tax deadline.

Overall, the IRS anticipates most taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of when they file electronically if they choose direct deposit and there are no issues with their tax return. The IRS urges taxpayers and tax professionals to file electronically. To avoid delays in processing, people should avoid filing paper returns wherever possible.
