Electric scooter company, Bird Rides, Inc., is listed at number seven on the list. According to the Travis County Tax Office, the company owes $147,195.17. The deadline to pay 2021 taxes was Jan. 31 of this year.
TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas – Bird Rides, Inc. has responded after the Travis County Tax Office threatened to seize the scooters.
The company said they have submitted its payment to the county and are working to get this resolved.
ORIGINAL STORY: Ten property owners owe Travis County over $2.5 million in property taxes, according to the Travis County Tax Offices “Top Ten Delinquent Property Owners” list that was released last month.
The deadline to pay 2021 taxes was Jan. 31 of this year.
Electric scooter company, Bird Rides, Inc., is listed at number seven on the list. According to the Travis County Tax Office, the company owes $147,195.17.
“This a company that just refused to talk to us,” said Bruce Elfant, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector.
Elfant said after reaching out via email and phone after the initial tax bill and delinquent notice, they were left with one option.
“We will file a lawsuit and we will get a judgement from the court and then we will search for any property we can seize to satisfy the judgement,” he said. “We will auction off at the courthouse steps.”
According to the City of Austins website, Bird has a fleet of 4,500 scooters in Austin.

Austin Independent School District, the largest taxing authority in Travis County, recently commiserated with local homeowners regarding rising property taxes that will fund its schools.
Earlier this year, the school district notified homeowners in the community “it’s likely you felt the pang” of its most recent tax appraisal, adding it was “expensive” to live in Austin with its “skyrocketing property values.”
The property taxes for a specific $630,000 three-bedroom home in Austin have increased 31.6% above inflation from 2013 to 2021, demonstrating a trend of growing property taxes in Texas.
“Texas is in the midst of a property tax crisis and it is being driven by excesses at the local level,” said James Quintero, policy director for the Texas Public Policy Foundations Government for the People initiative. “What’s happening in Travis County is that businesses and homeowners are under assault.”
Property taxes are growing at a faster clip than both inflation and population growth, Quintero said.
In Travis County, where Austin is located, the average homeowner paid $5,471 in property taxes in fiscal year 2015 and that increased to $9,261 in fiscal year 2022, according to a report from the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
That property isn’t an outlier.
“There’s a huge differential there between how fast its taxes are growing and how fast its taxes ought to be growing,” Quintero said.

MANOR, Texas Retired U.S. Marine David Pate, and his wife Jeanne, a former teacher, moved into a new home just outside Austin in February 2021. As soon as they moved in, they applied for property tax exemptions. A month later they were approved for disabled veteran and over 65 exemptions.
The tax bill they received in October showed the couple owed $0 in property taxes. The couple believed the senior and 100% disabled veteran exemptions covered them for the entire year.
The Pates were shocked when nearly a year later they learned not only had their tax exemptions been taken away but they now owed $3,770.09.
told us it was a mistake, and they shouldnt have given them to us because we werent in our house in January, Pate said.
The couple qualified for senior and disabled veteran property tax exemptions for most of 2021. The home was still under construction in January 2021. In April 2022, TCAD said it mistakenly granted the over 65 and disabled vet exemptions for the entire year.
An April 2022 review of the Pates application flagged the error and the exemptions were stripped entirely.
The Pates were left with four months to appeal and get their disabled veteran and over 65 exemptions added back on.
But when Jeanne Pate began calling the TCAD to figure out what she needed to do to have them reinstated she says she got no help.

Whether Property Taxes Increase Depends On New Tax Rates
Homeowners began to get their appraisal notices in the mail last week, and many had sticker shock. According to the Travis Central Appraisal District, the 2022 median market value for a residential property in Travis County rose 53 percent to $632,208a phenomenal $218,805 increase over 2021.
That comes on top of another $59,000 gain in 2020, for a two-year change of 78 percent.
Whether or not these drastically increased property values translate into a higher tax bill will depend on the tax rates that local governments set when they go through their budget process later this year.
The tax bills themselves will start coming in October 2022, with payment due by January 31, 2023.
Who sets the tax rates
The Travis County Tax Office collects and remits tax on behalf of all of the taxing entities in the county. However, Travis County, cities, school districts, utility districts, Central Health and emergency services districts each set their own annual tax rate and exemptions .
Typically the governing body of each taxing entity sets its rate after a public hearing in August or September. Each taxing entity is legally required to calculate and post the rate that it would need to set to keep revenue flat. If it adopts a nominal rate that is higher than this, it is considered to have raised the effective rate .

People who own property in the Austin area recently received new valuations from the local appraisal district. This number, known as your appraised value, estimates what your property would currently sell for in Austins record-breaking housing market.
The appraisals are a lot higher than they were last year. According to the Travis Central Appraisal District, on average, appraised values rose 56% over the past year.
But if you live in the house you own, and have filed what is called a homestead exemption, the amount you have to pay taxes on is entirely different. This is called your taxable value, and it is probably much lower than the estimate of what your home would sell for unless you bought your house in the past year. Then those numbers are likely the same.
