California is also offering a one-time “Middle Class Tax Refund” for current residents who filed 2020 state returns. The state began sending payments in early October and expects to have 95% of all payments delivered by the end of 2022.
Software Electronically Transmitted To Customers
According to Regulation 1502, the sale of noncustom software to customers who download the software from a server is generally not subject to sales tax because the transaction does not involve tangible personal property. However, if the customer is provided a copy of the software on a physical storage medium such as a CD-ROM or a DVD, the entire transaction is generally subject to sales tax. Thus, a customer can generally avoid sales tax liability by purchasing a downloadable version of software instead of a physical version.

Filing Your California Income Tax Return
As we mentioned before, almost every resident in California must file an income tax return. There are many different ways to file your California state taxes online, starting with the FTBs free online portal, CalFile. Even if your taxes are being withheld at the proper rate, and even if you expect a refund, you have to file or you could face a penalty.
The deadline for filing your California income tax return is April 15. If you do not owe any tax or are owed a refund, you have an automatic 6-month extension until October 15. If you are non-military living or traveling abroad on tax day, you get another 2 month extension, making the final deadline December 15. Military personnel may qualify for additional extensions.
If you miss the deadline to file and ignore reminder notices from the FTB, you could face a Failure to File penalty of 5% of the tax due for every month that the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%.
If they suspect fraud, the penalty jumps from 5% to 15% and from 25% to 75% respectively. The minimum penalty is the lesser of $135 or 100% of the tax required to be shown on the return.

Taxes In California For Small Business: The Basics
Small business owners enjoy several distinct advantages from doing business in California. The state is home to several populous, growing, and dynamic metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. These cities are ripe with talent, flush with upper-class and wealthy residents, and all are home to prestigious universities that pump out new classes of educated workers every spring and winter.
Additionally, California is a pleasant place to live. In most parts of the state, winters are not too cold, and summers are not too hot or humid. The state offers diverse scenery and landscapes, including beaches, deserts, mountains, and valleys.
That said, California is not all easy living for small business owners. In particular, business taxes in California are some of the most oppressive of any state. High taxes, combined with the onerous business regulations for which California is also known, have led many business owners in the 21st century to flee the state for places they perceive as more friendly operating grounds, such as Texas and Florida.
Recently, a California business owner encapsulated this phenomenon with a state map he circulated on social media on top of the map he printed, “The Best Avenues for Business Owners in California,” and then highlighted all the interstates and highways leading out of the state.
