Tax Extension Filers Dont Need To Wait Until October 17
IR-2022-141, July 19, 2022
WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service is reminding the estimated 19 million taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2021 tax return that they don’t have to wait until mid-October to file. If a taxpayer has all the necessary information to file an accurate return, they can file electronically at any time before the October deadline and avoid a last-minute rush to file.
Taxpayers who requested more time to file an accurate return have until October 17, 2022. Those who have what they need to file, however, should file as soon as possible to avoid delays in processing their return.
Taxpayers who have questions can get help with most tax issues online or by phone. The IRS.gov website has free and easy to use online tools and resources to help taxpayers get answers 24 hours a day. Voice bots help callers navigate interactive voice responses to simple payment or notice questions, and quickly get responses to Frequently Asked Questions.
The Interactive Tax Assistant is a tool that provides answers to several tax law questions specific to individual circumstances based on input. It can determine if an individual must file a tax return, their filing status, if they can claim a dependent, if an income type is taxable, and their eligibility to claim a credit or deduct certain expenses.

It happens. You file your tax return, then realize you forgot to report some income or claim a certain tax credit. You don’t need to redo your whole return. Along with filing an amendment using Form 1040-X, youll also need to include copies of any forms and/or schedules that youre changing or didnt include with your original return.
IRS Form 1040-X is a two-page form used to amend a previously filed tax return. TurboTax can walk you through the amendment process to correct your tax return.
To avoid delays, make sure you only file Form 1040-X after youve already filed your original Form 1040. If youre filing a Form 1040-X to collect a tax credit or refund from a previous year, youll need to file within three years after the date you timely filed your original return, or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
Why Did So Many People Ask To Postpone Tax Returns In 2022
Every year there are Americans that procrastinate pulling together their paperwork and sitting down to crunch the numbers for their tax filing. Call it human nature. The IRS allows people to file a Form 4868 to request the automatic six-month extension.
While the extension gives taxpayers more time to get their house in order, it doesnt relieve filers of the need to pay any taxes owed by the Tax Day filing date. Taxpayers should pay the amount that they owe, or as much of what they think they owe, to avoid penalties and interest on the outstanding debt to Uncle Sam.
The outsized number of Americans requesting a six-month extension in 2022 could be the result of several factors. They may have thought that the IRS would once again push back the official filing date as they did for the 2020 and 2021 filing season due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Possibly they were waiting for any last-minute changes that might have come out of Congress to help alleviate hardships still being experienced. One thing is for sure, calculating the child tax credit and/or the recovery rebate credit made crunching the numbers harder for many filers.
Extension filers, remember the deadline is October 17. Visit .

Will My Refund Be Issued By Paper Check Or Electronically
Previously, the Department might have issued you a paper check, even if you selected to receive your refund by direct deposit or prepaid debit card. This protection helped the Department avoid sending your money to an account or debit card that is controlled by a criminal.
While the Department honors taxpayer requests to issue a refund electronically, there may be situations in which we will determine its safer to issue a paper check. In some cases, we may send a letter requesting verification of taxpayer identity instead of automatically changing your request to a paper check. The letter instructs you to go to myVTax, select Return filing verification, and enter the verification code included on the letter. This verifies your request and allows us to proceed with processing your refund.

Request Your Tax Refund Before You Lose It
Itâs still a good idea to file your taxes after the due date if you expect a refund, but you donât want to wait too long.
The IRS usually allows you three years from the due date of your tax return to request a refund. After this time, youâll forfeit your tax refund. For example, your 2021 tax return is due on April 18, 2022. From that date, you have three years to request a refund. In 2025, if you donât file your 2021 return by the tax due date, youâll lose your tax refund. The U.S. Treasury now owns your money.
That means if youâre one of the estimated 1.5 million taxpayers owed money on their 2018 taxes who have yet to file, youâre running out of time.
The IRS said it has $1.5 billion of unclaimed 2018 tax refunds, but these taxpayers must claim it by April 18. Maine and Massachusetts tax filers have until April 19, because the tax deadline falls on Patriot Day, an official holiday observed by both states.

Key Information To Help Taxpayers
The IRS encourages people to use online resources before calling. Last filing season, as a result of COVID-era tax changes and broader pandemic challenges, the IRS phone systems received more than 145 million calls from January 1 May 17, more than four times more calls than in an average year. In addition to IRS.gov, the IRS has a variety of other free options available to help taxpayers, ranging from free assistance at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly locations across the country to the availability of the IRS Free File program.
“Our phone volumes continue to remain at record-setting levels,” Rettig said. “We urge people to check IRS.gov and establish an online account to help them access information more quickly. We have invested in developing new online capacities to make this a quick and easy way for taxpayers to get the information they need.”
Last year’s average tax refund was more than $2,800. More than 160 million individual tax returns for the 2021 tax year are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the traditional April tax deadline.
Overall, the IRS anticipates most taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of when they file electronically if they choose direct deposit and there are no issues with their tax return. The IRS urges taxpayers and tax professionals to file electronically. To avoid delays in processing, people should avoid filing paper returns wherever possible.
