How Can I Find Out The Detail For The Amounts Shown On My 1098
Detail transactions are available on your Student Center Account. Use the drop-down link under Finances to select the View 1098T hyperlink to find a listing of qualified expenses charged to your student account during the calendar year included in box 1 of the 1098-T Statement. Also included are financial aid awards, grants, and scholarships included in box 5 of your 1098-T Statement.
Does Box 1 Of Form 1098
Room and board are not qualified expenses for a tuition credit or for tax free scholarships. So, R& B are not included in box 1 of the 1098-T. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or deduction or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

What Part Of 1098
If the scholarships/grants exceed the qualified education expenses, then the student will report the 1098-T and all other educational expenses and scholarships/grants on the students tax return. The student will pay taxes on the amount of scholarships/grants that are not used for qualified education expenses.

To Enter Box 5 For Tax
There’s no specific field to enter scholarships received on a Form 1098-T, box 5. However, scholarships may affect the adjusted qualified education expenses eligible for education credits on Form 8863. Refer to IRS Pub. 970 for determining if this adjustment needs to be made for the client’s specific tax situation.

What Semesters Are Included In My Form 1098
Typically, charges are posted to your student account in November for the Spring semester and in June for the Fall semester. Box 1 of Form 1098-T reflects payments made during the calendar year for qualified tuition and related expenses and it is not based on when the classes were attended or billed to the student account. Your Term Fee Bills will show the dates payments were posted to your account and are a valuable resource for determining the semesters that are included in your Form 1098-T. You can access your Term Fee Bills in the Bursar Services Tile in the Student Administration System.

I Graduated In May Do I Have A Form 1098
Some May graduates will not be issued a Form 1098-T because there is a possibility that payments for QTRE for Spring were made on or before December 31 of the preceding calendar year. If a student paid for the Spring semester and any other outstanding QTRE charges in the preceding calendar year, then the student would not receive a Form 1098-T.
What Should I Know About Form 1098
Form 1098-T is an information return. The IRS requires businesses that make reportable transactions to file information returns to the IRS and provide a copy to the other party involved in the transaction. For example, people with a mortgage would likely receive a Form 1098 from their lender, reporting how much mortgage interest they paid during a tax year. With a 1098-T, the business your college reports how much qualified tuition and expenses you paid it during the tax year.
The IRS uses these forms to match data from information returns to income, deductions and credits reported on individual income tax returns. So if a taxpayer claims an education credit on their federal income tax return and the IRS doesnt have a 1098-T in its system for them, then the IRS could follow up with that taxpayer to ensure theyre actually eligible for the credit.

What Is A 1098t
The UW Form reports all tuition and fees paid to the university, as well as scholarships and financial aid money received during the tax calendar year . These amounts are reported to the IRS.
One of the purposes of the 1098T form is to help students determine if they can qualify for an educational tax credit. Please refer to the IRS Publication 970 or visit our Education Tax Credits section for more information.
For tax filing purposes, the 1098T from the UW is an acceptable substitute form of the IRS 1098T form as it contains the same information. The UW 1098T form includes a detailed list at the bottom of the page reporting all transactions with the UW, such as expenses paid and scholarships received. This will allow you to see what is included in Box 1 and Box 5.

What Is A 1098
The IRS requires Temple to report, both to the student and the IRS, certain summary financial information for students who meet IRS reporting criteria. This information is provided to assist students in determining their eligibility for certain educational tax credits.
This includes the following for transactions posted to student accounts in the previous tax year:
- Payments received for tuition & qualified fees
- Information on non-student/family payments and loans, including:
- Temple administered grants & scholarships
- External/private scholarships
- Third party payments made by sponsors billed by the University on behalf of the student
The IRS now requires Temple to report payments received for qualified tuition and fees and university administered grants and scholarships.
Receipt of a 1098-T form does not establish eligibility for certain educational tax credits. Similarly, students who do not receive a 1098-T because they do not meet the IRS reporting criteria should not automatically assume they are ineligible for these tax credits. Students should consult a tax advisor to determine eligibility.

You Must Still Include Student Loan Help From An Employer For 2019
The CARES Act, a U.S. government response to the COVID-19 pandemic, allows employers to make tax-free student loan payments of up to $5,250 per employee, for the remainder of 2020. This may help when you file your 2020 taxes, if you have an employer who participates in this program. For your 2019 taxes filed in 2020, if you received student loan payback assistance from an employer, its possible that money will be considered taxable income.

If the parent is claiming the student as a dependent on their income tax return, then the parent enters the 1098-T Tuition form on their income tax return.
Is 1098 T income taxable?
Things on a 1098-T arent taxable income, with the exception of box 5, scholarships and grants. If those exceed the amount of the tuition expense, they may be taxable, given certain circumstances. But being taxable doesnt mean that youll end up paying taxes on them, because that depends upon your other income and deductions.

General Information About The 1098
The 1098-T form is used by eligible educational institutions to report information about their US resident students to the IRS as required by law. As an eligible educational institution, UC Berkeley reports certain financial and identifying information regarding US resident students for which UC Berkeley has received payments of qualified education expenses for the corresponding tax year. Included in the 1098-T form are qualified charges that were paid and financial assistance received for the corresponding tax year. Loans are excluded and not reported on the 1098-T form.
The 1098-T form is not intended to be used for determining any taxable income you may have received from scholarship or fellowship payments. The university does not report scholarship or fellowship income to you or to the IRS. Please use Worksheet 1-1 in IRS Publication 970 to figure the amount of a scholarship or fellowship grant you can exclude from gross income.

Qualified tuition and related expenses are sometimes referred to as qualified education expenses, although the terms are not always interchangeable. What Has Changed On The 1098
In January of each year, Georgia Tech prepares IRS form 1098-T for eligible students reflecting amounts associated with tuition and financial aid for the prior calendar year as outlined in the IRS regulations.
In previous years, the 1098-T sent provided a figure in Box 2 of the form that represented the qualified tuition and related expenses that were BILLED to the students account for the calendar year. Due to a change to institutional reporting requirements mandated by federal law, beginning with tax year 2018, the amount of QTRE PAID during the calendar year will be reported in Box 1.
Please note that all payments received at the Bursars Office by December 31, 2021, will be posted to your student account. Payments that are made online to your student account in the Bill + Payment portal will post on the date the payment is made. Payments received after December 31, 2021, will be reported on the 2022 1098-T form.
