Why your NC state tax return may take longer: 2 Wants to Know

If you haven’t received your tax refund after at least 21 days of filing online or six months of mailing your paper return, go to a local IRS office or call the federal agency . Taking these steps wont necessarily fast-track your refund, according to the IRS, but you may be able to get more information about what’s holding up your refund or return.

What Can Cause A Delay In My North Carolina Refund

A number of things could cause a delay in receiving your North Carolina refund, including the following:

  • Math errors in your return or other adjustment. If the adjustment causes a change to your refund amount, you will receive a notice.
  • You used more than one form type to complete your return. The form type is identified in the top left corner of your return. Your state tax returned for you to complete using the correct form type.
  • Your return was missing information or incomplete. Sometimes returns are missing information such as signatures, ID numbers, bank account information, W-2s, or 1099s. Your state return may be returned to you. You must complete the correct form type before your return can be processed.

Return Delayed Heres What To Do

If youve been waiting on your tax refund and you feel in the dark, your first response might be to call the IRS directly. However, this is rarely recommended.

Youre likely to find yourself on the line a long time before you reach a real person, and then theyll just direct you to use Wheres My Refund? Save time, and blood pressure, and avoid calling the IRS unless directed to.

The Wheres My Refund? tool is the best choice for checking the status of your refund. You can use this within 24 hours of e-filing your tax return, or within 4 weeks of mailing a paper return.

Wheres My Refund? will require your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact refund amount.

Wheres My Refund? updates daily, typically overnight, to provide you with the latest information regarding your tax return.

Alternatively, the IRS offers a mobile IRS2Go app. This works similarly to Wheres My Refund?, allowing you to check the status of your return daily.

Options For People Expecting A Faster Refund

If you were counting on a tax refund by April or May, you may be anxiously awaiting your return and wondering if there are other options to access necessary funds.

Ideally, its best to be patient and hold out for your refund for as long as you can. People need to allow more time for their return to be processed and plan for delays, says Benjamin Peeler, partner-in-charge of IRS tax controversy services at Eide Bailly, a Fargo, North Dakota-based certified public accounting and business advisory firm.

There arent real options to push a refund sooner and there are even fewer options than there were before the covid delays with the IRS, he says.

You may be able to get a tax refund advance, but examine your budget to see if taking out a loan is your best option. You should plan on budgeting extra money for any fees and the interest you will be paying, depending on how long it will take for you to repay the loan and when you will receive your tax refund.

While many tax preparers such as H& R Block and Jackson Hewitt offer loans or advances with favorable termsincluding not charging for loan origination fees or interest if they prepared your tax returnmost of these programs deadlines occurred mid to late February and are no longer available, says Daniel Fan, senior managing director and head of wealth planning at First Foundation Advisors in Irvine, California.

Computation Errors On The Tax Return

The U.S. tax code can be complicated, with numerous exceptions, special circumstances, and phase-outs of deductions and credits.

Its no surprise that manually prepared returns frequently include math errors, Holland notes.

Some of the most common calculation errors include the taxable amount of Social Security income, taxable income, and the Child and Dependent Care Credit. Errors in the amount of taxes withheld, estimated taxes paid, the Earned Income Tax Credit or the increased standard deduction for certain taxpayers also frequently result in computation errors on a tax return.

Tax preparation software like TurboTax, which automatically runs required calculations, can help you avoid math errors on your return. TurboTax also checks for errors and calls them to your attention before you file.

    Irs Takes On More Duties

This tax season is unlike any other.

The IRS has been handling rollouts for three stimulus programs since April 2020.

Now, the IRS is preparing to launch a way to send money each month to families who qualify for an expanded child tax credit. That effort is to begin in July.

In addition, the IRS is taking steps to automatically refund some tax money relating to jobless benefits money this spring and summer.

The follow-up refunds would apply to people who filed their tax return reporting unemployment compensation before the recent tax break for unemployment benefits was put into place as part of the American Rescue Plan.

The first special refund payouts will likely be made in May, and they will continue into the summer.

A tax rule change that excludes a portion of unemployment benefits from being included as income was signed into law March 11, roughly a month after the 2021 tax season began. Tax forms and tax software had to be updated after the season started to reflect the change.

Right now, the IRS said tax returns are opened in the order received.

“As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud,” the IRS said.

“If we can fix it without contacting you, we will.

“If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter.”

How Long Is The Tax Refund Wait 2020

Why is my direct deposit tax refund taking so long?

Be aware that the IRS is still facing a backlog of unprocessed individual returns, 2020 returns with errors and amended returns that require corrections or special handling. And while refunds typically take around 21 days to process, the IRS says delays could be up to 120 days.

ALBANY, N.Y. People waiting for their federal refunds should know it could be a while before they see any money. Tax preparers say they are seeing a delay in the processing of tax returns with some refunds taking months to land in bank accounts.

Bill Dardanelli, the owner of Capital District Tax Services in New York, said this year is highly unusual and unlike any other year of his 35 in the business. Processing delays arent the only problem, trying to contact the Internal Revenue Service has also been difficult.

Weve never encountered a problem like this, he said.

Its bad enough some of Dardanellis clients who filed their taxes in February are still waiting for their refunds, but there are lengthy waits for people trying to call the IRS. Dealings in the past with the IRS have always been successful, Dardanelli said. But, this year even the IRS contact for professional tax preparers has not been helpful.

A series of stimulus payments and monthly child tax credits from the federal government, to help people navigate COVID financial woes, are adding complications for an agency geared more toward taking in revenue than disbursing payments.

What Is A State Tax Lien

  • If you do not pay your taxes, the IRS or state can find other means to satisfy tax debts. While both terms fall under the same umbrella, levies and liens have different meanings. A lien is a legal claim against property to secure payment of a tax debt while a levy is the seizureor garnishmentof property to fulfill that debt.

Where Is My Tax Refund And Why Is It Taking So Long To Get This Year Some Irs Refunds Are Taking 6

A pushed-to-the-limit Internal Revenue Service and perplexing tax rules are leaving millions of taxpayers waiting and wondering when they’ll get their hands on much-needed refund cash.

For some early filers, the wait for a tax refund has been six weeks to eight weeks already far longer than a typical wait of 21 days or less after filing their 2020 income tax returns in February or March.

“Is the car going to break down before the money gets here?” asked Tonya Williams, 69, a Flint, Michigan, widow who is raising her two grandchildren.

Death and taxes: Americans grapple with filing the final tax return for deceased relatives in a pandemic year

“I pray a lot, let me say that,” says Williams, who adds that as a breast cancer survivor, she knows it is essential to limit stress.

She’s babying the car as much as possible.

Her grandson Ja’Tavion Walker, 14, who lives with her, is getting a ride from his basketball coach until she’s able to afford repairs to the catalytic converter on her 2015 Cadillac SRX Sport Utility.

And fortunately, she hasn’t had to drive her granddaughter Don’Jhanaya Buck, 11, who also lives with her, to a long list of dance competitions elsewhere in Michigan during pandemic-related pauses.

“I’m their transportation. It’s me,” she says.

Her tax return was filed Feb. 27, and she’s expecting to receive a refund of $5,522. The money would cover the estimated car repair of $3,000. But until it arrives, she’s hoping to delay fixing the car.
