To Complete The Amendment Process:

  • From within your TaxAct return , click on the Filing tab. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then choose Filing.
  • Click on Amend Federal Return
  • The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter the appropriate information to complete the amended return. At the end of the process you will be prompted to print Form 1040X, and the mailing address for the form will be provided .
  • If you receive an error when accessing Amend Federal Return that states you must first complete the filing steps prior to amending the return, go to the Filing tab and click Print Return. You will need to go all the way through this process until it actually prints the return . Once you do this, you can go back to the Filing tab and choose to amend the return.The amended return, Form 1040X, will need to be printed when completed and mailed to the IRS. Attach any accompanying documents that may be required. These would be any forms created in the return due to the changes made, or any documentation that would support the changes made . Amended returns cannot be e-filed.

    How To Amend A 2021 Return

  • On the top of TC-40, page 1, on the Amended Return line, enter the code number from the list that best describes your Reason for Amending.
  • Enter the corrected figures on the return and/or schedules.
  • Enter all other amounts as shown on your original return. If you received a refund on your original return, enter the amount of the previous refund on line 29 of your 2021 amended return. Usually this involves filing Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to report changes to your income, deductions or credits. You may also be able to make certain changes to your filing status.

    When Do You Need To File

    You normally need to file your amended return within three years from the date you filed your original return or two years from the date you paid any tax due, whichever is later. And, if you filed your original return before the due date, its considered filed on the due date.
