H& R Block Online Review 2022 (Tax Year 2021)

September 5, 2022 by bright

H& R Block tax software provides easy-to-use tax service for e-filers who want to claim their relevant income, credit, and deductions. By providing complex and simple returns in the help options and user experience.

Although it is not the most expensive or the cheapest tax software, it is a solid competitor in the crowded market for tax software. h & r block tax software is distinct from its competitors because it provides more options for personal tax preparation, DIY software, online applications, in-offices services, and several alternatives for virtual expert assistance.

Made My Life Much Easier Living Outside The Us

Pros:

As a foreigner I knew nothing about tax returns and was afraid to commit any mistakes. H& R Block was a huge help for me as a beginner because it ensures you are actually doing the right thing. The step by step process was long, but ok to follow through. I wouldn’t be able to file my taxes without an online tool as I wasn’t present in the United States at the time.

Cons:

The process was kind of long, but everything was great to me in the end. There is so much information to fill out that it’s hard to know if you’re doing it correctly, but the company is great in validating your information and asking only the necessary things.

What Data Do They Want

America is sorely lacking privacy laws, but it does have one that prevents tax-prep companies from disclosing the contents of your tax return. For H& R Block and Intuit, that means they cant automatically use the contents of anyones returns for purposes other than preparing taxes.

Both companies are asking you to grant them special permission to go beyond these default federal protections and use your return including your income, investments and mortgage details to help them upsell you on other things.

In addition, H& R Block also wants your permission to share some of the content of your return with two independent companies in the Philippines that help them do customer service.

Free Online: Best For Students And Most W

The Free Online plan, as the name suggests, costs $0 for filing federal taxes and $0 for one state return. If you made money in multiple states, you’ll need to pay $37 for each additional state return.

H& R Block’s free tax plan works best for W-2 employees with simple tax returns, but it’s also great for students as it allows for both education tax credits and deductions for student loans, tuition and fees.

The free plan includes coverage of 1040 Schedule 1, which allows reporting many more types of income like gambling winnings, alimony and stock options. It also allows for income adjustments such as educator expenses and IRA or student-loan interest deductions.

While the free plan also covers 1040 Schedule 3 — “Additional Credits and Payments” — it doesn’t include most of the supplemental forms needed to claim the many credits, such as the increased child care credit, the retired saver’s credit and the electric vehicle credit, on that schedule.

H& R Block Free Online does include Form 8863 for education credits, including the Lifetime Learning Credit and American Opportunity Credit, which again bolsters its appeal for students.

While the paid versions of H& R Block include access to phone or web chat support, the Free Online version does not. You can buy support: Online Assist , Worry-Free Audit Support or Tax Identity Shield .

What Happens If You Click Agree

This might come in the form of offers for financial products when youre done with your taxes, ads on sites that belong to sister companies , or ads that come from these companies via email.

Both companies claim you might actually want these offers because they could save you money. For example, H& R Block says if a tax law changes that might impact your particular situation, it can reach out with advice and probably another service to sell you. Or if your data indicates you have a very high mortgage rate, Intuit might show you an ad for where you could get a lower one.

Intuits prompt also claims that if you agree to share your data youll actually see fewer offers overall.

For H& R Blocks overseas data-sharing request, clicking yes means that if you call its support line youre probably going to be connected to someone in the Philippines. It also means that should one of H& R Blocks overseas partners get breached or lose your data, you might have less recourse to take action or sue them since theyre not a U.S. company.

H& R Block told me it vets these partners, and to its knowledge they havent suffered from a data breach.

What Are H& r Block’s Different Products

H& R Block offers four different online products: Free Online, Deluxe, Premium and Self-Employed, which range from $0 to $85. The decision on which is best for you depends mostly on the deductions and tax credits you want to claim.

Free in-person audit support is offered with all H& R Block tax plans, and enhanced “Worry-Free Audit Support,” including IRS communication and in-person audit representation, can be added to any plan for $20. H& R Block’s Online Assist feature — additional virtual support with live assistance and screen-sharing — can also be purchased on top of any of the plans for either $40 more for Basic or Deluxe, or $60 for Premium or Self-Employed. Tax Identity Shield — proactive protection against tax identity theft — can be added to any plan for another $20.

How Worried Should I Be

I grade these privacy policies as a C+. And I recommend saying no to both kinds of requests.

Its a good thing that they ask you to opt-in thats what Americas privacy laws ought to be requiring for lots of things. But the language these companies use is vague and doesnt make clear what they wont do with the content of your tax return.

When I pressed, both companies told me that if you click agree they wont sell your tax return to another company. They also told me theyre not going to crunch your financial information to sell to banks, economists or investment firms.

Another basic question these privacy policies fail to answer: If you consent, how long will they hold onto your tax return for these extra purposes? Neither company would give me a specific answer.

These companies say theyre just trying to help people solve financial challenges, but they may get more out of the data exchange than you do. Intuit, in particular, has been going deeper into a kind of business that uses our personal information as its fuel. It recently acquired Credit Karma, whose entire business model, as Ive cautioned before, asks you to pay with your privacy for free services like credit scores.

Your data stays inside our systems, says Intuit spokesman Rick Heineman.

Bottom line: With data as important as your tax return, you should minimize risk. And the golden rule of privacy is, the fewer hands that can access your data, the safer you are.

How Much Does It Cost To Hire A Cpa Is It Worth It

According to the 2020-21 Fees Practices Survey released by the National Society of Accountants, working with a CPA for your tax filing will cost $200 to $500, depending on the complexity of your return — how many schedules and extra forms need to be completed — and where you live. Each additional schedule, for things like rental income or investment gains, could cost around $100.

If you have self-employment income, itemized deductions, investments or other complicated tax situations, the extra cost is likely to be worth it. It can also be easier to send off your forms to an expert and know they’ll take care of everything. Remember that the extra amount you’re paying in fees could get you a better return, making the upfront cost a smart investment.

Keep in mind, however, that it depends a lot on your individual filing situation, your withholdings and your tax bracket. As good as many software programs are, a human expert is often the way to go.

How to File Your Crypto Taxes with H& R Block | 2022 | ACCOINTING.com | Intro

Pros:

I personally do my taxes myself, it saves me time and money. The software is easy to use and helps me know what important documents I need to file my taxes. It also verifies that all my information I entered is correct. I am also able to check for updates and receive emails and text messages with my status. I am always in the loop of what is happening and I like that. I was able to download my taxes because I needed it for my daughters daycare scholarship.

Cons:

I do not see any issues with the software. It was easy for me to use. The only thing I could recommend is the layout of the software. It can be challenging to find what I need and to navigate to certain sections, but it is not a deal breaker.

How It Compares

Youre probably curious about how H& R Block compares to other Canadian tax software, like TurboTax or Wealthsimple Tax. Honestly, H& R Block can hold its own, but there are definitely areas where it falls a little short.

TurboTaxs pricing is a little higher, but you get a few extra features, like having seven years of taxes stored online and a handy mobile app. TurboTax also has a specific plan for those who are self-employed, something that H& R Block lacks.

Wealthsimple Tax is a little easier to use and also uses a pay what you want model, meaning you can pay $0, $20, or as much as you see fit for each return. This is a good choice if you know your tax return is going to be very straightforward.

The unique advantage of using H& R Block is the fact that you have the option of filing online or in-person. If your finances get more complex in the future, you can opt to go into an H& R Block office to consult with an expert, something that neither TurboTax or Wealthsimple Tax are set up for.

Who This Is For

The best way to file your tax return is electronically, and you should do it as soon as possible. It will get you your refund quickly, and it can help thwart identity theft. For the 2022 tax year, you should do this especially if youre missing any stimulus payments this also applies to households that dont normally have to file federal taxes. Need further convincing you should file electronically? The IRS still has a backlog of over 10 million mailed-in paper tax returns from the previous year, coupled with the nightmare of the pandemic.

Online tax software can simplify the chore of doing your taxes on your own and filing electronically, and its less expensive than hiring a pro. A few companies offer desktop tax software, but these packages tend to be more expensive and worth the investment only if you must work offline or have several returns to file . You would also need to buy the desktop software again each year to keep up with tax changes.

The online tax apps we recommend here are best for people with simple returns , as well as those who might benefit from itemizing common deductions such as home ownership, dependent care expenses, tuition or student loans, large charitable deductions, a health savings account, or medical expenses. Most people take the standard deduction, but if itemizing makes more sense, the software helps you fill in the appropriate forms and informs you when you need to upgrade in order to file for those deductions or credits.
