Gather Tax Filing Information

No itemizing needed to claim these 23 tax deductions

Youll need to do this whether youre hiring a tax preparer or doing the tax filing yourself. The goal is to gather proof of income, expenses that might be tax-deductible or win you a tax credit, and evidence of taxes you already paid throughout the year. Our tax prep checklist has more guidance, but heres a short version of what to round up:

  • Social Security numbers for yourself, as well as for your spouse and dependents, if any.

  • W-2 form, which tells how much you earned in the past year and how much you already paid in taxes.

  • 1099 forms, which are a record that some entity or person not your employer gave or paid you money.

  • Retirement account contributions.

  • State and local taxes you paid.

  • Educational expenses.

Why You Should Consider Filing A Tax Return Even If Youre Not Required To File

Filing a tax return is probably not something most people enjoy doing. So why would anyone want to file a tax return if they don’t have to? Well, actually, there are some important reasons you might get a tax refund and you may be eligible for an additional stimulus payment. If youre eligible for future payments or credits, it helps if IRS has your 2020 tax return and direct deposit information on file.

While people with income under a certain amount aren’t required to file a tax return because they won’t owe any tax, if you qualify for certain tax credits or already paid some federal income tax, the IRS might owe you a refund that you can only get by filing a return. Some tax credits are “refundable” meaning that even if you dont owe income tax, the IRS will issue you a refund if youre eligible. Many people miss out on a tax refund simply because they dont file an IRS tax return.

There is usually no penalty for failure to file if you are due a refund, but why miss out on money thats rightfully yours? If, however, you wait too long to file your return and claim a refund, you risk losing it altogether. Thats because an original return claiming a refund must generally be filed within three years of its due date. If you havent filed a tax return for tax year 2017 and had any money withheld from your paychecks or are eligible for tax credits, you need to file by May 17, 2021. If you dont, the money is forfeited, by law, and becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.

St And 2nd Rounds Of Stimulus Payments

The first two payments were based on your 2018 or 2019 tax information. Individuals qualified for full stimulus payments if their adjusted gross income , which is income minus certain deductions, was $75,000 or less . The IRS reduced the stimulus payments by $5 for every $100 earned above the income thresholds.

The first full stimulus payment was $1,200 for single individuals, $2,400 for married couples and $500 per qualified dependent. The second full stimulus payment was $600 for single individuals, $1,200 for married couples and $600 per dependent.

If you earned more than $99,000 , you got no first stimulus payment. With the second stimulus check, your payment was reduced to $0 once your AGI reached $87,000 for individuals and $174,000 for married couples.

Understand How Your Taxes Are Determined

The government decides how much tax you owe by dividing your taxable income into chunks also known as tax brackets and each chunk gets taxed at the corresponding tax rate. The beauty of this is that no matter which bracket youre in, you wont pay that tax rate on your entire income.

The progressive tax system in the United States means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher federal income tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower federal income tax rates.

Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments, are different from most other tax benefits. Thats because people can get them even if they have little or no income, and even if they dont usually file a tax return. This is true as long as you are not being claimed as a dependent by someone else and you have a Social Security number. When it comes to missing stimulus payments, its critical that you file a 2020 tax return even if you dont usually file to provide information the IRS needs to send the payments for you, your eligible spouse and eligible dependents. For anyone who missed out on the first two rounds of payments, its not too late. If you didn’t get a first and second Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amounts, you can get that missing money if youre eligible for it, but you need to act. All first and second Economic Impact Payments have been sent out by IRS. If your 2019 tax return has not been processed yet, the IRS wont send you the first or second payment when it is.

Applying For Tax Amnesty Or Pardon

The CRAs policy is to encourage tax laggards to come clean through tax amnesty. The VDP is designed to encourage both individuals and corporations to come forward and disclose material they didnt previously report, possibly avoiding penalties or prosecution.

The application must be voluntary, and the CRA must not have initiated an enforcement action, including sending out an audit letter. This criterion makes it harder for those who intentionally avoid paying their taxes to benefit from the program.

Taxpayers with extraordinary circumstances, like financial hardships, may have further options for relief from their tax obligations.
