How To Complete An Amended Return

Amending an Individual Tax Return

You can file your amended return electronically, or on paper. If you file electronically, follow the instructions for your software provider.

In either case, make sure to indicate that its an amended return before filling it out.

For paper returns, mark the oval labeled Amended Return. Complete the new return using the corrected information, as if it were the original return. Do not make any adjustments to your amended return to show that you received a refund or paid a balance due with your original return. Attach a complete copy of your federal amended return, if applicable.

If your amended return results in additional tax due, interest must be paid on the tax you owe from the due date on the original return to the date filed or postmarked.

Amended Return Not Received Not Appearing On Irsgov

I filed an amended return back in April of 2021 and I have yet to receive it. I called the IRS before and the girl just told me to give it another 30 days. Still didn’t receive it. I check the “Where’s My Amended Return” function on IRS.gov almost everyday to wait for an update, but now it doesn’t even show up when I enter my information. The website just tells me my information does not match any of their records, and I know for a fact I am entering it correctly. I even tried the hot line option, still told me my information does not match any records. I can’t even get through to talk to a representative now, so I’m starting to freak out that my amended return was thrown out or something like that after almost a year of it sitting in the “has not been processed” stage. Am I starting to panic for no reason? Is there something else I can do? I even tried calling my local branch but they only have a number for scheduling appointments.

Helpful Reminders When Checking Your Amended Returns Status

Sometimes the process isnt completely straightforward, especially if further adjustments need to be made or the IRS has issues with what you submitted. Here are some important reminders when youre figuring out how to track your amended tax return:

  • The IRS will send you a notice if they dont agree with the changes in your amended return. This notice is called a notice of claim disallowance.
  • Dont file a second tax return or call the IRS if the full 16 weeks havent passed since you filed your amended return .
  • Dont try to check your amended returns status online until its been three weeks since you filed the amended return. This is how long it can take for your amended return to show up in the IRSs system.
  • The IRS may take longer than 16 weeks if there are issues with the amended return, including the following:
  • There are errors on the amendment
  • The amended return is incomplete
  • You forgot to sign the amended return
  • They are requesting more information from you and returning the amendment
  • There is an identity theft or fraud issue
  • The amended return requires review of an appeal or reconsideration of a decision
  • The same processing-time guidelines apply to both paper and electronic amended returns
  • Direct deposits arent allowed for amended returns, according to the IRS

Learn What The Different Statuses Mean

Your amended return status should be updated in the system after about three weeks since you filed it. The three different status updates are as follows: received, adjusted, and completed. Received means that the IRS has your amended return in the system and it is still being processed. Adjusted indicates that the IRS has made an adjustment to your account based on the amendment. Completed means that processing is complete and the IRS has mailed you the information you need.

The IRS says it updates the Wheres My Amended Return? tool every day, typically during the night. You may not see an update until the next day but can continue to check the status daily. A tax expert can help you understand what you should do.
