Millions Still Haven’t Received 2020 Tax Returns

It turned out my taxes hit some kind of system error. The first time I called, after the 21-day mark, they said my taxes had an error and the system should resolve the issue itself within the 12-week window after filing.

Once 12 weeks passed, I called again. This time, the gentleman I spoke to said there was a system error that wouldn’t fix itself. He submitted a request to another team to re-process my taxes and said I should get the refund within another eight weeks.

Everyone has a different tax situation. Luckily I wasn’t facing an audit or a penalty. But I did need to call to get my refund resolved. You will probably get different news, but you won’t know until you call to find out.

Undelivered Federal Tax Refund Checks

Refund checks are mailed to your last known address. If you move without notifying the IRS or the U.S. Postal Service , your refund check may be returned to the IRS.

If you were expecting a federal tax refund and did not receive it, check the IRS’Wheres My Refund page. You’ll need to enter your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of your refund. You may be prompted to change your address online.

You can also to check on the status of your refund. Wait times to speak with a representative can be long. But, you can avoid waiting by using the automated phone system. Follow the message prompts when you call.

If you move, submit a Change of Address – Form 8822 to the IRS you should also submit a Change of Address to the USPS.

Reason #: Your Mailing Address Is Out Of Date

The second reason you havent received your refund check is that you dont have your mailing address updated with the IRS. The IRS will update your address every time you file a tax return, so if youve moved since the last time you filed, then the IRS no longer knows where you live. And its not the IRSs responsibility to make sure you actually receive your refund, they just have to send it to your most recent address.

Even though the IRS directs you to mail in Form 8822 Change of Address, the IRS is facing delays in processing time. If you want the refund to arrive sooner, a better option would be to have a licensed tax professional call the IRS on the priority practitioner line and update your address while on the phone. This method will also allow the professional to see if the IRS shows your return as processed and whether the refund was already mailed out to your old address. If thats the case, then youll need to request the IRS to trace the check to make sure it was not deposited, and then theyll reissue it to the new address on file. Its also possible that youll find out the return is unprocessed due to an identity verification letter mailed out to your old address, in which case you should go to the identity verification website listed under reason number one.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

12 Responds: Why have I not received my federal tax refund yet?

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service can help you understand more about tax refund offsets.

    Your Return Needs Further Review

As mentioned above, if you see a message saying that your tax return needs further review by the IRS, you can expect your refund to arrive later than the average three weeks. For instance, if you receive a CP07 Notice, it means the IRS has received your tax return and is holding your refund until it completes a more thorough review. You might get this notice if you’re claiming treaty benefits or deductions on the Schedule A section of your taxes.

If the agency finds no issues, your refund could arrive within six to 12 weeks, assuming no taxes are owed. If the IRS does find issues with your return, it’ll send you a notice with instructions on what to do within that same period. That means you’ll get your refund months later than you anticipated.

Havent Received Your Tax Refund Yet Starting July 1 The Irs Will Pay You More In Interest

IRS says 11M tax returns pending in backlog

Right on schedule, the IRS is behind on processing millions of tax returns from 2021.

That’s frustrating for taxpayers waiting on their refunds, which have averaged over $3,000 this year. But there’s one bit of good news: Generally, if your refund is delayed more than 45 days, the IRS will pay interest on the total. Even better: Starting July 1, the interest increases from 4% to 5%, compounded daily.

There are numerous reasons the agency has fallen behind, including being short-staffed, still needing to catch up from 2020’s backlog, and accounting for tax changes made in COVID-19 stimulus legislation. Additionally, it may take longer for agents to process paper returns and those with errors, which they need to do by hand.

Before the filing season even began, the IRS predicted that returns would be delayed this year. But the backlog should be cleared before the end of the year, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told lawmakers during an appearance in front of the House Ways and Means Committee in March.
