You Didn’t Properly Enter Your Stimulus Payments

IRS says 11M tax returns pending in backlog

In 2021, most Americans received a third stimulus check payment related to the COVID-19 pandemic. While that money is non-taxable, it needs to be reconciled on your tax return if you are claiming the recovery rebate credit.

In recent testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee, IRS Commissioner Charles P. Retting said that in 2020, the IRS “received far more than 10 million returns” where taxpayers failed to properly reconcile their stimulus payments with the amounts entered for their recovery rebate credits. Those returns require a manual review and create lengthy delays.

If you plan to claim the recovery rebate credit on your tax return, learn how to avoid this error using IRS Letter 6475 or your online IRS account.

To get a prompt tax refund, be sure to enter your advance child tax payments correctly.

How Can I Check My Amended Return Status

Its important to realize that the standard WMR or IRS2Go refund status checking tools from the IRS do not track amended tax return status.

You need to instead use IRS tool, Wheres My Amended Return instead . You can use this tool to check the status of your Amended Federal Tax Return , for this year and up to three prior years.

The WMAR tool is updated once a day, usually at night. So checking it multiple times a day wont help.

You will need to provide your SSN, Date of birth and Zip code to use the tool.

This tool is normally updated weekly, starting 3 weeks after your mailed submission, in line with your IRS processing cycle. But can update more or less frequently depending on IRS actions.

Finally, its important to remember that filers can only submit up to three accepted Amended Returns. So if you have submitted more than these subsequent filings will get rejected and you wont see any status for these on WMAR.

Why Do I See Irs Treas 310 In My Bank Statement

Amended Refund completed. Still havent received it. It says completed ...

If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see IRS TREAS 310 listed in the transaction. The 310 code simply identifies the transaction as a refund from a filed tax return in the form of electronic payment. You may also see TAX REF in the description field for a refund.

If you see a 449 instead of 310, it means your refund has been offset for delinquent debt.

Checking Status Of Your Refund

Taxpayers can check the status of their refund at the IRS site “Where’s My Refund?”

People will need to know their Social Security number or their Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, their filing status and their exact refund amount.

The IRS says people can start checking the status of their refund within 24 hours after an electronically filed return is received by the agency, or four weeks after a taxpayer mails a paper return.

The tool will provide information about three phases of processing: Alerting the taxpayer when their return is received, when their refund is approved and when the refund is sent.

Why Haven’t I Gotten My Refund Yet

There are numerous reasons why your tax return may not have been completely processed yet, resulting in a delayed refund. Here are the most common.

  • Your return had errors or was incomplete
  • You owe the IRS money
  • Your bank account info was incorrect
  • You filed a paper return
  • You didn’t properly enter your stimulus payments
  • The IRS suspects identity theft
  • You filed an amended return
  • Your return needs further review

In testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee, IRS Commissioner Charles P. Retting said that, in 2021, the agency received “far more than 10 million returns” in which taxpayers failed to properly reconcile their stimulus payments with their recovery rebate credit, which required a manual review and resolution.

If the delay is due to a necessary tax correction made to a recovery rebate credit, earned income tax or additional child tax credit claimed on your return, the IRS will send you an explanation. If there’s a problem that needs to be fixed, the IRS will first try to proceed without contacting you. However, if it needs any more information, it will write you a letter.

If you’ve requested a paper check for your tax refund, that’ll take longer, too — about six to eight weeks, according to the IRS.

Tax Refund in 2021: Why You Still Don’t Have Your Money

Under the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015, the IRS is required to hold tax returns for folks who claimed those credits until Feb. 15. Amended Return Processing Schedule

Unlike the regular IRS refund processing schedule where refunds are processed within 3 weeks, you will have to wait up to 20 weeks or more for the IRS to process amended returns since they prioritize regular returns.

This has been exacerbated in recent years due to IRS backlogs and staffing shortages.

Below is a table showing an estimate of when refunds will be processed , assuming it has been accepted by the IRS.

Reason #: You Received An Identity Verification Letter From The Irs

Filed my taxes early April. Still havent received my refund yet. Anyone ...

The number one reason is that you received an identity verification letter from the IRS. This is by far the most common reason we see federal tax returns remaining unprocessed for long periods of time, and the IRS will not issue a refund until the return has been processed. The IRS has been getting an increasing amount of fraudulent refund claims, and implemented many anti-fraud measures, so they flag a high number of returns for identity verification before processing them.

When you receive an identity verification notice, the IRS puts your return on hold to process until you respond. If you never respond, the return never processes, and you never get your refund. You may even get a notice in the mail telling you that you never filed your return. While the IRS does keep a record of the date the return is received, you will have to adequately respond and clear the identity verification notice for the IRS to consider the return filed.

We are seeing individuals not properly respond to this notice because most of the notices direct you to call a phone line with the IRS that takes hours to get ahold of someone. Therefore, the first thing you should do if you believe you may have gotten this type of notice is to try to complete the online identity verification with the IRS.

Wheres My State Tax Refund Illinois

The State of Illinois has a web page called Wheres My Refund, where you can see if the state has already processed your tax return and initiated your refund. The only information you need to enter is your SSN, first name and last name. If the state has not processed your return yet, you can set up an email or text notification to let you know when it does.

Your Return Is Incomplete

Having an incomplete return can also trigger an IRS review, which could mean a longer wait for your refund. For example, if you filed a paper return and forgot to enter a key piece of information, such as your SSN, or you failed to sign your tax forms, then the IRS wont process your return until those items are checked off.

Your Return Needs Further Review

As mentioned above, if you see a message saying that your tax return needs further review by the IRS, you can expect your refund to arrive later than the average three weeks. For instance, if you receive a CP07 Notice, it means the IRS has received your tax return and is holding your refund until it completes a more thorough review. You might get this notice if you’re claiming treaty benefits or deductions on the Schedule A section of your taxes.

If the agency finds no issues, your refund could arrive within six to 12 weeks, assuming no taxes are owed. If the IRS does find issues with your return, it’ll send you a notice with instructions on what to do within that same period. That means you’ll get your refund months later than you anticipated.

Tax Refunds Delayed By 6 Months Or More For Some Paper Filers: Here’s Why

IRS TAX REFUND 2022 – KEY UPDATE – Tax Returns, Refunds Alert, CTC/EITC Refunds Arriving

Already millions of taxpayers have been waiting four or five months for their federal income tax refunds after completing 1040 paper returns and putting those returns in the mail in late January or February.

No money is in sight in late June and, frankly, the wait will take longer.

The Internal Revenue Service has essentially been unable to process the paper 1040 returns that individuals filed in 2022 until it’s finished processing the pileup of paperwork filed in 2021.

It’s a first in, first out process for paper returns. And if the IRS isn’t done with processing paper 1040 returns filed by individuals in 2021, it can’t move on to paper returns filed so this year.

This week, the IRS said, the agency will hit a milestone of sorts and be done processing all of the originally filed Form 1040 paper returns without errors that it received in 2021.

As of June 10, the IRS had processed more than 4.5 million out of a total of more than 4.7 million individual paper tax returns received in 2021.

It’s an important step that will enable the IRS to move on to work on the 1040 individual paper returns filed in 2022.

You can’t get a refund, after all, if the IRS doesn’t process the return. Unfortunately, many taxpayers have absolutely no idea that the IRS is buried in this much paperwork. They’re just stumped as to why they don’t have their money.

Getting Refunds Within 21 Days Of Filing

If all goes well, though, taxpayers who e-file can receive their refunds via direct deposit as quickly as one week after filing based on previous years’ processing time, according to trade publication CPA Advisor.

It’s important to note that processing time typically slows down as the tax season gets underway and the IRS handles more returns, the publication added.

In the meantime, tax experts say there are some steps that taxpayers can take to help ensure a quick tax refund, which is even more important this year given that the IRS is starting with a backlog. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins issued a report to Congress in January that warned she is “deeply concerned about the upcoming filing season” given the backlog, among other issues.

“The first thing you know if you are going to cook a meal, you have to have the kitchen cleaned up from the last meal,” said Mark W. Everson, vice chairman at Alliantgroup and former Commissioner of the IRS. “It just snowballs into a terrible situation.”

Delays in processing tax returns count as one of the agency’s most pressing problems, Collins said in her report, which described an agency in crisis.

Americans are hearing the message: Potential IRS processing delays ranked second among the three top concerns of people who are expecting a refund from the IRS this year, according to a Bankrate.com poll of almost 2,500 people released February 22.

Reason #: You Filed A Joint Return And Payment Is Misapplied

The fourth reason you havent received your refund check is that you made a tax payment on our spouses IRS account who was not listed as the primary taxpayer on the return. We have seen the IRS accept jointly filed tax returns but then not be able to connect the tax return with the tax payment because the payment was made under the spouses social rather than the primary taxpayers. The IRS will keep the payment on the spouses account, but the IRS needs to be told to apply it to the joint tax return. Therefore, it may be easiest to make sure you make tax payments under the primary taxpayers social, which is the name of the person put first on the tax return.
