Million Unemployment Refunds Are Coming: Irs Timeline Tax Transcripts And More

The IRS has sent more than 8.7 million unemployment tax refunds.

Have you been waiting on your unemployment refund? If so, weve got good news for you: The IRS announced last week its disbursing another round of 1.5 million total refunds via direct deposit and by paper check. Some are reporting on social media that theyve received IRS updates on their tax transcripts with pending refund dates in late July and early August. But many other taxpayers say they havent received any money or clues that its on the way.

This is what we know. The first $10,200 of 2020 jobless benefits, or $20,400 for married couples filing jointly, was made nontaxable income by the American Rescue Plan. Taxpayers who filed their returns before the bill was passed in March are now eligible for an adjustment and a possible refund, which the IRS is supposed to issue automatically sometime this summer. On average, taxpayers can expect to receive $1,686, though it could be more or less, depending on individual factors.

In an announcement this week, the agency said it is sending the payments to eligible taxpayers who filed a 2021 SC Individual Income Tax Return by Oct. 17, 2022. Rebates are being issued by direct deposit or mailed paper checks.

When Can I Expect My Federal Tax Refund

According to the IRS, more than 90% of refunds are issued within three weeks, but it can sometimes take longer.1 In fact, a few factors can affect how long it actually takes for you to get your federal tax refund:

Filing method. The IRS says e-filing with direct deposit is the best and fastest way to get your tax refund. If you file a paper return, someone at the IRS needs to enter your information into an electronic system before your tax return and refund can be processed. Then, the refund must be mailed to you. E-filing with direct deposit removes those steps, cutting down on processing time.

Certain tax credits. By law, the IRS says it cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits. The IRS says if you claim either of those two tax credits, you can expect direct deposit into your account as early as the first week of March assuming you filed at the beginning of tax season and there are no other issues with your tax return.2

Weekends and holidays. Dont forget that many banks and financial institutions dont process payments on weekends or holidays, and if youre getting your refund mailed to you, mail isnt delivered on federal holidays. Weekends and holidays like Presidents Day can add a few extra days.

How To Watch For Your Tax Refund From Beacon Hill

If your share of the $3 billion that the Massachusetts state government is returning to taxpayers hasnt hit your bank account or mailbox yet, keep checking.

After the state collected enough revenue to trigger a little-known 1986 law capping the annual growth in tax collections, the Massachusetts Department of Revenue announced that the excess money would start flowing in November to people who had filed income tax returns in 2021.

The refunds are automatic, with no action required by the taxpayer. If you included bank information on your 2021 tax return, you’ll get your refund by direct deposit, labeled “MASTTAXRFD.” Otherwise, it’ll come via a check in the mail. The checks will include a short explanation of the tax-cap law and why the refund is being issued. If your address has changed since filing your 2021 taxes, the Department of Revenue advises updating your address on the MassTaxConnect portal to make sure the checks find you.
