How Can I Track An Amended Tax Return

How to Amend a Previously Filed Tax Return

The good news is, if youre eager to see where your return is, there are ways to track it. You can call the IRS at 1-866-464-2050 or use its Wheres My Amended Return tool.

The tool can provide the status of amended returns for the current tax year and up to three years prior. The system can tell you if the IRS received your amended return, if your return has been adjusted to account for a refund, balance due or no change, and if the IRS is finished processing your amendment.

Once your amended return appears in the system, you can check its status daily since the system updates every day, usually at night.

How To Go About Filing An Amended Tax Return

With all the complexities of the US tax code there are times when mistakes are made on a tax return. So what do you do when you need to amend your income tax return?

First, you want to make sure that you actually proceed with an amendment. In most cases, you have to file your amended return within three years of the date you filed the original tax return, or two years from the date you paid any tax liability, whichever is the later of the dates.

Now, if the problem with the return is because you did not report income, or you filed under the wrong status or made other errors that would require you to pay more taxes, then you must file an amended return to correct the problems.

The first step in filing the amended return is to obtain Form 1040X. The 1040X serves a replacement to the original tax return. It also shows the difference between your original taxes and the amended return, so you will have to be prepared to document every deduction in the same manner as when you originally filed.

Make sure to double-check everything your amended tax return is likely to be examined even more closely than the original return. Occasionally, when filing the amended return you may want to attach a statement for the reason in changing the original return.

If You Owe Additional Tax With The Amended Return

Calculate the tax, penalty, and interest due, and include both your check and the IA 1040XV amended payment voucher with the amended return. You may make your tax payment online through ePay on our website or with a credit or debit card.

No penalty for additional tax is due if you voluntarily file an amended return and pay all tax due prior to any contact by the Department. However, interest will be due.

Do not send amended returns with the current-year return.

IRS Form 1040-X is the form you fill out to amend or correct a tax return. On that form, you show the IRS your changes to your tax return and the correct tax amount.

  • If youre fixing more than one year of returns, youll need to fill out a separate Form 1040-X for each. Youll also need to include forms or schedules affected by the changes.

  • If you’re filing Form 1040-X to get money back, you generally need to do so within three years of filing your original return or within two years of paying the tax, whichever is later.

You might catch an error before the IRS does, or you might receive new tax documents after youve already filed if your employer sends you a revised W-2, for example. In those cases, dont fire off a letter to the IRS saying, Forgot to include some income. Heres 10 bucks” or “You owe me $50.” Fill out Form 1040-X.

The IRS also has an interview-style tool that can help you to determine whether your situation requires filing an amended return.

In 2020, the IRS began allowing taxpayers to file Form 1040-X electronically. This means you can file an amended 1040 and 1040-SR form for tax years 2019, 2020, 2021 online. If you need to file an amended return for an older return , the amended return must be filed with the IRS by mail.
